Man the West is crazy. You'd think at 42-19 the Rockets would have the 3 seed sown up.

This reminds me of a few years back when there was nearly a 4 team tie at 58-24 with the Rockets, Spurs, Nuggets, and Blazers, and the Rockets would have won the tie break and won the division with a tie break that came down to the fifth criteria: record against Playoff teams.

We seem to get these clusters every year in the West. It certainly keeps things interesting! Unlike the pathetic east that might have a couple of two team battles and a lame struggle between losing teams fighting for a low Playoff seed.

I'm feeling really good about the game tonight. I have a wonky post to write about the tie break between us and the Blazers if they win, but I forecast some Magic Numbers dropping. Go Rockets!

:mad::mad:

Not only did we miss the 2nd seed by losing that last game, we lost HCA.

Didn't matter though, we still whooped Portland.

Clinched the #12 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/9.

Rockets rally for huge win
The Rockets did not play well most of the game and trailed by more than ten for a long stretch of time. However, this team is living up to its Clutch City name. James Harden led the Rockets in a huge 118-113 overtime thriller over the Portland Trailblazers. The Rockets shot poorly and gave up way too many offensive rebounds, but they did win the turnover battle 13-20. We are now 4-0 on our Six and a Bit Games of Doom and are showing we deserve to be considered a Contender. All Magic Numbers drop 1.

The Blazers lose an additional point for the loss. We also clinch the season series by virtue of our 3-1 head to head record. So that’s a third point dropped. We effectively have a three game lead over the Blazers and are looking really good to at least claim home court in the first round.

The Thieves stumble again
Despite Durant’s continued awesome play, the Thieves have faltered since Westbrook returned. They played a Lakers team in freefall, having lost three straight and giving up 136 points a game during that stretch (including a 48 point loss to the Clippers). Go figure, the Lakers took down their second Western Conference Contender in a week with a 114-110 victory over the Thieves. Jodie Meeks erupted for 42 points, and the Spanish Acquisition had a solid double double with 20 points and 11 boards. Kevin Durant had another phenomenal game with 27 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds, and Serge Ibaka scored 21 to go with his 15 boards. The Thieves are now just 3-5 since Westbrook rejoined them, have dropped to the #2 spot a game behind the Spurs, and lose an additional Magic Number. We are only 2 back in the loss column.

We are catching them at the exact right time. The Rockets are healthy and on one hell of a roll while OKC is a funk. The Thieves will score a lot, but this Rocket team can put a lot of points on the board against even the best defensive squads. I really like our chances on Tuesday. It should at least be a close game, but I think we will take them down. Winning both games against them would draw us even in the loss column, square us at 2-2 head to head, but we would still lose the tie break due to their sizeable conference record lead.

The Battle for 6-8
The Mavs looked to bounce back strong from their recent losing streak. Following their recent win over the Blazers, Dallas followed up with a solid win over a reeling Pacer squad 105-94. Devin Harris and Monta Ellis led the Mavs with 20 apiece, and Dirk scored 14, collected 8 rebounds but shot just 3-14. Paul George put up 27 points and 11 boards for the Pacers who have lost four straight.

Phoenix looked to score a big win in their fight for a Playoff spot when they played at Golden State who has been on a nice roll. The Warriors led by 18 in the fourth before the Suns mounted a comeback that fell a bit short in a 113-107 loss. David Lee led the Warriors with 26 points and 9 rebounds, and Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry added 22 and 18 points respectively.

Gerald Green had another strong game with 25 points, and the Dragon scored 24 points to go with his 6 assists in the loss. The Suns lose an additional Magic Number. For now the Suns sit on the outside at the #9 tied with Memphis and Dallas at 26 losses. They lose the tie break to the Grizz, and are tied 1-1 with the Mavs with a deciding game in Dallas on April 12.

Cellar Dwellers
The Raptors have been playing well and continued their winning ways, beating the host Wolves 111-104. Kyle Lowry had a triple double of 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 dimes, and DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points and collected 7 boards for the Raptors who have won 6 out of 7 and continue to lead the East for the #3 seed. Free Kevin Love! came up just short of a triple double with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists. The Wolves have pretty much played themselves out of a Playoff spot and trail all the 6-8 teams by at least 6 games. Minnesota loses an additional Magic Number.

The Nuggets and Pelicans are both teams going nowhere, but it’s in my contract that I have to cover them. Anthony Davis put up a monster 32 points and 17 rebounds in a111-107 win over the Nuggets. Kenneth Faried put an effective 22 points and 14 boards for the Nuggets who drop an additional Magic Numbers.

Good bye Kings
The Nets rise above .500 again with a 104-89 over the Kings. Marcus Thornton led the Nets with 27 points, and Boogie Cousins had a game high 28 points and 20 rebounds. With the loss Sacramento loses as additional Magic Number, and the Rocketsclinch a better record than them

Monday Games
Only one interesting game for us tomorrow when the Clippers host the Suns. The Suns are just 8-8 since February 1 while the Clippers are riding a 7 game winning streak.

A couple of Cellar Dwellers are in action: Nuggets at Bobcats, Hawks at Jazz

Clinched the #12 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/10.

Clippers keep streaking
The Clippers pushed their winning streak to eight games with a 112-105 victory over the visiting Suns. Blake Griffin put up a game high 37 points and 6 boards, and Chris Paul scored 17 and handed out 11 assists. The Dragon led the Suns with 23 points but only had 5 assists to go with 5 turnovers. Phoenix drops a Magic Number and drops a full game back in the loss column behind Memphis and Dallas.

Cellar Dwellers
Charolette won their seventh straight home game, beating the Nuggets 105-98. Al Jefferson had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Kemba Walker scored 24 to go with 7 dimes and 6 boards. Kenneth Faried put up 25 points and 9 rebounds, and Ty Lawson scored 24 and dished 6 times. The Nuggets lose a Magic Number.

Two very bad teams met when the Hawks won 112-110 in Utah. Kyle Korver scored 26 shooting 4-4 from downtown, and Paul Milsap had 23 points and 8 rebounds. Trey Burke led the team with 23 points for Utah.

Rockets going to OKC
The Rockets and their 5 game winning streak face an OKC team that has had their number but who is mired in a funk and is just 3-5 since Westbrook’s return. The Thieves are fresh off a bad loss to the Lakers, and this is a game the Rockets can certainly win. This is a statement game to show that we can win even if our Playoff route takes a trip through OKC. The Thieves are just 2 games ahead of us, but they likely own the tie break even if we win both of our remaining games (it’ll be decided after we finish up our Eastern Conference games) so we need to capitalize tomorrow. We also need to keep pace with the equally hot Clippers and Spurs. I think it keeps raining Magic Numbers, and the Rockets will take their winning streak to 6.

Tuesday Games
There are three very relevant Contender vs Contender games also on tap. The streaking Spurs travel to Chicago to take on a rolling Bulls team. The slumping Blazers continue their rough road trip with a stop in Memphis. The Mavs go to Golden State and try to keep afloat in the race for 6-8 while the Warriors could make a play at the #5 seed.

Spurs at Bulls, Blazers at Grizz, Mavs at Warriors, Bucks at Wolves, Kings at Pistons

Mavs, Grizz, and Suns are in a dog fight for the last spots. it's hard to predict who will win the proverbial #14 pick. Phoenix looks to be the shakiest one at this point. But I think it will go down the wire.

Portland and GS are unpredictable. If they somehow get it together, they still have a chance to fight for the HCA. But they are as likely to collapse and fall to the bottom bunch dog fight.

Mavs, Grizz, and Suns play each other the last few games of the season, and that will likely decide the 7, 8, and 9. I agree with you. Phoenix, with its road heavy Contender schedule and its current position one game back, is in the most likely to be left without a ticket to the dance.

I think the Warriors are at least a lock for 6 and they could catch Portland if the Blazers don't stop playing in a funk. I'm not willing to drop the Blazers out of the top 4 yet, but if they fall 3 games back without a tie break, I don't think they can come back. The Warriors and Blazers are tied 1-1 with a pair of games left in Portland.

Clinched the #12 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/11.

Rockets come up short
If ever there was a perfect time to send a message in OKC this was it. The Rockets have been on a roll, and the Thieves have been in a funk. But the Thieves sure seem to have our number, winning another one 106-98 to go 3-0 against the Rockets this season. The Rockets drop to #4 in the West, but are still 4-1 on their Six and a Bit Games of Doom.

Spurs and Blazers in action
San Antonio stormed out to a 38-14 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 104-96 victory over Chicago. Tony Parker scored 20 and dished 9 times, and Manu added 22 points for the Spurs, who have won 7 straight and maintain their top spot in the conference. D.J. Augustin led the Bulls with 24 points. They beat the Heat, but the Bulls have lost to the Grizz and Spurs at home around that win. Hopefully their losing streak to the Southwest division continues when they host the Rockets on Thursday.

A healthy and peaking Memphis Grizz hosted a slumping Blazers team and took care of business with a 109-99 victory. Marc Gasol had 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists, and ZBo chipped in with 18 points and 12 boards for the Grizz. Memphis now has firm control of the #7 seed with a full game up in the loss column on both Dallas and Phoenix. Damian Lillard scored 32 but shot just 8-21, and LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers. Portland is off to 0-3 start on their road trip and face the Spurs next. They are only two games up on the Warriors. Portland loses a Magic Number.

Battle for 6-8
The Warriors stayed hot and beat up the visiting Mavs 108-85. Andrew Bogut had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Crawford scored a team high 19 for the Warriors. Golden State now has a 2 game lead on the Grizz and 3 over the Suns and Mavs. They are also only 2 games back of Portland for the #5 spot with 2 games left between the two teams, both in Portland. Monta Ellis led the Mavs with 15 points, and Dirk had a quiet 12 points and 6 rebounds. Dallas loses a Magic Number.

Cellar Dwellers
The Wolves beat the league worst Bucks 112-101. Free Kevin Love! had an impressive 27 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 blocks, and Kevin Martin put up 26 points and no defense. Brandon Knight led the Bucks, who maintain their 3 game lead on Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine.

In a battle of Cellar Dwellers, the Pistons beat the visiting Kings 99-89. Josh Smith scored 24 points on 10-17 shooting to go with 8 rebounds, and Rodney Stuckey added 23 off the bench. Rudy Gay scored 20 but shot 8-21, and DeMarcus boogied his way to 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 blocks.

Wednesday Games
The Rockets are off, but it’s a busy night in the Western Conference, highlighted by the ice cold Blazers visiting the red hot Spurs. The streaking Clippers host the equally hot Warriors in another huge game for seeding. All four teams in the battle for 6-8 are in action with the Grizz and Mavs on the road against Probables, and the Suns get to host the Cavs.

Blazers at Spurs, Warriors at Clippers, Grizz at Pelicans, Mavs at Jazz, Cavs at Suns, Nuggets at Magic, Kings at Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine

Oh how I wish the season ended today. The playoffs could not setup any better than they do as of this moment.

Western Conference

1 San Antonio 47-16
2 Oklahoma City 47-17
3 LA Clippers 45-20
4 Houston 44-20
5 Portland 42-22
6 Golden State 41-24
7 Memphis 37-26
8 Dallas 38-27

Not only would we get Portland in the 1st round, then we would get a good matchup against either SAS or Dallas. On top of that OKC would have a terrible matchup with Memphis while LAC draws GSW in a very entertaining series.

I could easily see the 2nd round looking something like this. (1) SAS vs. (4) Houston and (7) Memphis vs. (6) GSW.

Absolutley agree. This seems ideal. I dont know about gs vs memphis though. I see okc vs. the clips battling it out in round 2

Agree. And I think this is exactly how it is going to actually end. Even though the Rockets are playing very well, the Clippers schedule just seems easier.

Clinched the #11 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 3/12.

The strong keep rolling
The Spurs hosted a Blazers team that had dropped three straight and coasted to an easy 103-90 victory for their eighth straight win. Typical Spurs win where they barely trailed and had a balanced attack. Patty Mills and Danny Green led the team in scoring with 15 and 14 respectively. Pop is wicked smart, and this Spurs team looks really scary.

Damian Lilard led the Blazers with 23 points but shot just 9-22, and LeMarcus Aldridge scored 14 before leaving in a wheel chair with a bruised back in the second half . X-rays were negative, but his status is unknown. That’s four straight losses for the Blazers, and they lose a Magic Number. It’s not been a good week for Portland. They’re now an effective four games back of the Rockets. It certainly seems like they’re drifting back into a race with Golden State and Memphis.

The Warriors saw their five game winning streak end as the Clippers won their ninth straight 111-98. Blake Griffin put up a monster 30 points and 15 rebounds, and Chris Paul wasn’t shooting well (5-15) but still had 16 points, 12 assists, and 8 rebounds. The Clippers are another team that looks ready to kick Playoff ass right now.

Klay Thompson led the Warriors with 26 points, and Curry scored only 13 points but also had 11 assists. The Warriors could have closed to within one loss of the Blazers, but they lose a Magic Number instead. They face the Blazers in Portland on Sunday.

The Race for 6-8
The Grizz rallied with a 9-0 finish capped with a Conley layup with 1.5 seconds for a 90-88 win over the Pelicans. Mike Conley had a team high 16 points, and Marc Gasol scored 15 and collected 9 rebounds. That’s four straight for Memphis who looks more likely to make a play for 5 or 6 than fall out of the top 8. This win improves the Grizz division record to an abysmal 3-11. Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 29 points and 10 rebounds. The Pelicans lose a Magic Number, and that sees them eliminated by the Rockets.

Dallas bounced back from their bad loss to Golden State by beating the Jazz 108-101. Dirk scored 31 and moved past John Havlicek for the number 12 spot on the all time scoring list. Monta Ellis shot just 6-15 but scored 16 to go with 11 assists and 7 boards. Trey Burke led the Jazz with 20 points.

The Suns felt great when Eric Bledsoe returned, but they weren’t so chipper after the Cavs scored a 110-101 upset. The Dragon led the Suns with 20 points, and Eric Bledsoe scored 15 on 5-16 shooting and led the team with 9 assists. That’s three straight losses and a dismal 3-7 record in their last 10 for Phoenix, and they fall a full game back of Dallas and 2 games back of Memphis. The Suns lose a Magic Number and need to right this ship quickly.

Cellar Dwellers
Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine is fully operational, and it will not be stopped. In its mad pursuit to catch the Bucks, Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine dropped its 18th straight loss 105-98 to the visiting Kings. Rudy Gay scored 27 on 12 shots, and Boogie shook down with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Bucks remain two games in front of Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine, but Sam Hinkie’s Tanking Machine win the tie break (they lost 1-2 to the Bucks) and will not win again this year.

The Nuggets won a 120-112 track meet over the Magic. Kenneth Faried put up 26 points and 9 boards, and Wilson Chandler scored 21 points and collected 10 rebounds. Arron Afflalo led the Magic with 24 points.

Back to work
We’re catching another team while they’re not playing their best, and we need to take advantage. The Rockets try to bounce back from a tough loss with a visit to Chicago and the tenacious Bulls. This is a game the Rockets should win if they come to play. I’m mighty curious how they’ll come out to play.

The only other Western Conference game is the Thieves hosting the Lakers as OKC tries to avenge Sunday’s loss in LA.

There’s not much chatter in the thread this year. Let’s hear what you think is going to happen or what you want to happen.

Please, child. The Clipps would mop the floor with the pretender Warriors.

Scribo, thanks for all of these Magic Numbers updates. Just love your writing style. For example, the other day, you mentioned that Kevin Martin had scored 26 points and no defense. lol.

Looking at the schedule, it does appear we will finish 4th. I just hope Memphis does not replace Portland as the 5th seed. That would be some battle.

I'm pretty sure the Rockets have all but locked up home court in Round 1 at this point thanks to owning the Portland and Golden State tiebreakers and having a sizable margin in the standings over those teams. So we can at least take comfort in that.

I think we can safely rule out the #1 seed at this point. The Rockets could go undefeated the rest of the way and still not catch the Spurs. OKC and the #2 slot is a longshot. Maybe if we finish with 60 wins(one of which would obviously have to be against the Thunder in Houston in April), but there's almost no margin for error left after losing Tuesday.

The Rockets do technically still control their own destiny with the #3 seed and the Clippers. I get that there are many on here who would prefer the #4 slot since that probably gives us Portland or Golden State in Round 1 and then San Antonio in the semifinals, but I still feel like we should shoot for the highest seed possible. You just never know what might happen.

For example, what if OKC is #2 and Memphis #7(which they are right now, BTW)? That's no layup for the Thunder. Remember, they got smoked by the Grizzlies last year in the playoffs 4-1, and OKC had homecourt in that series. Yes, the Grizzlies were arguably a better team a year ago and the Thunder were missing Westbrook(although a case can now be made that that ain't such a bad thing), but it really wasn't close. What happens if history repeats itself this year? Wouldn't the #3 seed look mighty friendly for the Rockets at that point? Which would you want? A 2nd round matchup on the road against the Spurs or one at home against the Grizzlies?

Anyway, long story less long, I say we go for the best record possible, get as high a seed as we can, and let the chips fall where they may.
