Why isn't rebounding listed as a percentage?

    Meaning...

Isn't the number of rebounds available for someone to grab dependent on the shots that were missed? So how can we compare howard having 20 rebs yest to say 10 rebounds the night before? Maybe there we less rebounds to be had..

    Am I an idiot?

Most of the stats available in the standard box score are not very helpful.

I am still trying to get a good understanding of the stats.nba.com rebounding stats. 8 times a game, the opposing team concedes the rebound to Dwight. Dwight has a low contested rebound percentage, but it appears he's contesting a ton of rebounds. Also, I suspect a lot of the uncontested rebounds are defensive rebounds that he didn't attempt a block.

I'm not sure contested rebound percentage is a good stat. Contested rebound attempts and uncontested rebounds seem to be more important.

Well if you're going down that rabbit hole, don't forget to consider points as a percentage, factoring in the percentage of your respective team's shots taken plus the percentage of time you have the ball in your hands.

This is a solid question...Almost anyone on the Rockets outside of Dwight or Asik are subpar at defensive rebounding. Its literally the only major obstacle holding the Rockets defense back. That's why after some research other CF members figured out the value of Hamltin.

This. I think Morey once said that whoever invented the box score categories was an idiot (or something to that effect).

I am just guessing. I think rebounding numbers and assist numbers are two of the most misleading categories.

BTW, this also bring up one of my pet peeves. I've always said that triple-double, double-double, and similar "achievements" are quite meaningless.

Stats are really interesting because on one hand they tell you all this information..at the same time..it's somewhat useless.
