unintentionally hilarious thread due to amount of times already discussed... or, in other breaking news: okay, anyway, the guy just joined, and only contributing members can use search to get answers to such questions, right? so ideally people would donate to the tipjar to become a contributing member, then use search to find answers before starting threads on topics that have been discussed 7 million times... Do we need an FAQ for the GARM for things like this?
oh, yeah, and this mid range shots statistically yield fewer points per attempt than corner 3s and dunks/layups, though they're worth taking if they're OPEN -- that's my understanding as a non-stats person... please do consider donating to the tip jar so you can use search, though! Thanks. Here's the link: http://clutchfans.net/tipjar.cfm
Actually it's a little more subtle than that. A 3 is nearly always better than a long 2 (18-21 feet) as you are only stepping out a few feet for 50% more points. The only time this doesn't apply is the handful of players where you're literally at the end of their range (severe drop off from 18 to 21 feet). Mid-range 2's can be as good or better depending on any number of factors including the quality of shot (contested, fadeaway, catch and shoot, etc), but more importantly WHO is shooting the mid-range 2. The players who shoot well in the mid-ranges should have the green light simply due to their efficiency at those ranges. Those who don't should be looking to either get to the rim, stay behind the arc, or pass the ball to someone who can get some value out of the shot. A good rule of thumb for mid-range or not is pure percentage. 33% at 3pt range translates to 50% in mid-range. If you're not shooting 50% or better from the mid-ranges, then you generally shouldn't be even trying to shoot them unless the shot clock is running out. Dunks and Lay ups are nearly always better than the mid-range 2 and long 2's even when contested unless you have strong shot blocking. And often the contested dunk/lay up is better than the 3 for non-scoring reasons. The reason this is true is that your opportunity for drawing a foul at the rim in addition to the shot itself goes way up. Opportunities for the And1 and stopping the clock to increase the number of possessions (evening out opponent hot streaks) has significant value. Additionally, getting opposing bigs in foul trouble can pay exceptional dividends later in quarters and in games as they either foul out or play less aggressive defense to avoid fouling out.
Did you watch tonight's game even at all??? Lin took (and made) a mid-range shot. Asik took a mid-range shot. What do you mean the Rockets don't shoot mid-range shots???
The mid range shot is the worse shot you can take, and the nerds in the front office make sure that no player takes them
Lin made an 18ft and a 9 ft (does that count as mid-range?) Lin has a midrange game, he wasn't using it before this game. I think he will be when he has become very good at the three and have more freedom.
The shot at rim and 3PTs is predictable without mid range game. Lin's 10-16ft mid range jumper is at elite level, 51.6%, in 2011-12 Last year, he is 22.7% only. Most Clutch players have their mid-range games.
Rockets shooting through 3 games 3pt attempts 1st 3pt% 13th 2pt% 3rd FT attempts 1st FT made 2nd effective FG% 5th Overall offense 6th If predictability matters, you'd think opponents would actually be able to defend our 3s and layups better.
NONONONONO! Mid range shots are the bane of an efficient team. Just look at how Harden plays. And statistically the mid range shot is only 3.2% more likely to fall than the 3 point shot.
Almost no NBA player shoots 50% from beyond 3 feet from the basket. And the actual league average for 3 point shots is north of 36%. The further down McHale and Morey can drive mid-ranged 2 point shots the more games the Rockets will win. Ideally shots should only be taken at the rim and from beyond the arc. Preferably in the corners. Except for Parsons, but he is the exception to the rule.
And I would like to say that McHale is one of two things. Either he is a brilliant tactician for emphasizing the at the rim or beyond the arc philosophy or he is great at taking orders from Morey. Either way he is one of the best coaches that the Rockets could ever have for this team.
its all Morey, Mchale is his whipping boy and occasional big name individual at the club.. see Dwight FA time. Morey owns Mchale <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/Oj3VphK9AMk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Fair weather fan comes from under his rock to jump in the bandwagon only to notice that water is wet, the titanic sunk, etc.... That said, OP is probably a troll account impersonating a bangwagoner, hence the patently obvious name of the account.

If you can't hit a 15 foot jumper you will really be hurt in the playoffs where they don't call as many fouls.
exactly! i have been a fan longer than alot of people on this thread. mind range is very important. what happens when our 3's dont fall? i dont know what everyone is saying but a mid range shot is definitely a higher percentage shot than a 3 pointer
