Great video, sharing stories about playing against an imaginary opponent and trying to make it out of the ghetto, going at MJ when he was younger, holding the scoring record that still stands in the nation - Durant came close to breaking it- and largely about faith but it's worth it. It's a shame how he is remembered and actually forgotten by the NBA and the legends. Only Shaq mentioned him quickly on Open Court recently about players that didn't make it. He probably never should have disrespected the National Anthem, and he never should have said this: "The flag represents tyranny and oppression" Shaq mentions him, because they were LSU teammates. Still don't see how they didn't win an NCAA championship.
What was he specifically fighting when he said this? Was it about US involvement outside the country? Or did he just mean in general?
For awhile he was disrespecting the National Anthem. Then when pressed why in a lockerroom interview, he said that. I don't recall exactly why, but it was a one or two years after the Gulf War.
Sounds like he was trying to become a martyr for no reason or maybe i just don't understand his reasoning. Did he not expect a outcry? Pretty dumb to ruin a career over nothing. I would understand if he was standing up for a certain reason but this just seems pointless.
I think that was the beginning of his muslim integration. He was Chris Jackson and never said much didnt bother anybody and just balled. People liked him because of just that. All of the controversy started once he turned and changed his name and so forth, but he never did anything to anybody. Just that whatever his new found beliefs were led him to do things like that, and I do think in the end it kind of changed the path of his career.
So do the British, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Australian flags then. Throw in Germany and Japan too. A lot of countries have brutal histories.
The greatest Irony of the whole video is that all of his accomplishments happened when he was a Southern Baptist believing in Jesus Christ....when he was Chris Jackson.
He still believes in Jesus Christ, but he doesn't believe in him as a God or Son of God or Holy Spirit or anything of that. He believes in Jesus as the Messiah, the Messenger of God, born from the Virgin Mary.
Off topic but why do people who convert to islam change their name? Is their a rule or is it just a custom? Or do they do it to fit in more within the community?
You don't necessarily have to but some do to just symbolize their entrance into Islam. But it's not a requirement. Some advocate converts to keep their given name unless the name has a conflicting meaning. For instance I know a Latino dude who converted to Islam. He simply changed his first name to Isa (The Arabic equivalent to Jesus not Hay-zeus ) Why did he change his name? Because his parents named him...Christian.
"NBA legend"? Wow we have some low standards now. I cannot wait for the interview with NBA legends Cuttino Mobley and Willie Burton.
