was the pilot drunk? Though I always found it scary how in san Fran the runway is right next to the water. I feel like its more dangerous

Well its a flight from South Korea, maybe miscommunication and they couldn't get some of them to stay in a holding area?

Some airports, SFO being one of them, have an autopilot system which actually allows the autopilot to land the aircraft itself. It's called a CAT-IIIc ILS.

However, that is really only used on ultra foggy days and the equipment is only installed at airports where this is persistent problem.

They certainly weren't using it today. Total pilot error. Most nice days like this approaches are handflown.

Just saw that the pilot only had 43 hours of experience with a 777

I read that that system has been shut down for awhile now.

Also there are many airports where the runaway is right against or sticking out into the water. In many cases like SFO the airport is built on constructed land out on the water.

It is really looking like pilot error, or perhaps an error with the velocity instrument readings. He just approached too slow and let the engines idle, which you never do on landings (or so say pilots quoted by the SF Chronicle). If you let the engines idle, then it takes too long to get them engaged if you need to skip the landing and try again. the flight recorder is showing the pilot(s) decided to pull up and abort the landing 1.5 seconds before impact, but the engines couldn't respond from idle in that short timeframe.

SF Chronicle also reporting a lot of internal injuries and spinal injuries. Apparently those lap belts really saved people but also punished them on such a violent ride. :(

Landing in a country where you don't speak the language and going to a hospital to recover from a broken back. Not very good.

They are lucky this happened in SF, not Miami because there are a lot of chinese there. You would think Bellaire St. has a lot of asians, they have 3x as many there in SF, not counting there colleges/universities at least 30% are asians. I believe their mayor is asian and Oakland's mayor is asian. So, language wouldn't be a problem.

I may be wrong, but I believe B-Bob is from SF... but you are right, there are a lot of asians in the area.
