So true, outside of the Harden trade he hasn't gotten that lucky. Has struck out on a lot of Free agents
Mj is good, but he is also lucky (he had all star teammates). Kobe too Phil is good but he is lucky he had the best players. This is pointless.
Thread is dumb. What was Morey's game plan? Stockpile assets until a player is about to leave and the team has to trade him away before he walks for nothing. He tried and failed with Deron and Bosh. Finally struck gold with Harden. Was he lucky? Yes. Was it 100% luck? No. He had a plan, he stuck too it, and it worked.
-signed by babies born with cancer and aids... The only thing Morey is good at is patience and being in a good situation when something presents itself and keeping flexibility. He's not proactive, he's struck out every time he's gone after a big time FA. He doesn't make things happen, he waits. His unorthodox way of turning over roster after roster has put him in a pretty good place, but there's still a possibility we don't get Dwight and end up over-paying for a guy like Bynum or big Al. He drafted Marcus Morris over Kawhi Leonard and Faried. He later traded Marcus for a second round pick. He's about to trade a #5 overall pick in a loaded draft for a late first round pick in a very ****ey draft. He does not win all deals like everyone thinks he does. I mean after all, isn't the Terrence Williams deal the reason we don't have our own first round pick? Royce White anyone?
Any Rockets fan from the last 30 years or so has to realize that luck has not been kind to the Rockets, historically speaking. (Championship teams aside) I don't actually disagree with your premise, but really from my standpoint it's long overdue after the streak of bad luck this team has had for so long. Just to name a few: Ralph Sampson Drug suspensions Game 7 vs. the Sonics Barkley's knee Pippen debacle The Utah Series ('97) Migraines Eddie Griffin The Dallas Series ('07) The Utah Series ('07) The Utah Series ('08) The L.A. Series ('09) Yao's knee Tracy's back Bosh? Gasol? etc?
Hind sight is always 20/20. You can make judgements on this and that but what you cant tell is what other moves may have happened if we got those players. You can't tell how K Martin may have played with Howard. You can't tell if Dragic would have stayed and played with Howard and Martin. There are so many variables that could have happened. Im jus sayin....
How many teams out there have gotten "lucky" and got a big time FA? Doesn't happen too often people. Ya'll trying to make it sound like there have been multiple superstars traded every year and we just missing. It happens a couple times every few years maybe? Even less for teams not in LA, Miami, Boston, Chicago.... Most big time FAs already know where they want to go play, so making a pitch will not sway them. So the Melo, Bosh stuff we NEVER had a chance. This is a dumb thread. This thread comes up EVERY draft and people complain about something. What we SHOULDA done. Just because a player drafted after our pick is being productive for another team, doesnt mean that same player would have been prouctive for us. So please stop trying to compare.
Morey is a good gambler. In his position (no high draft picks or superstars pre Harden) you have to gamble. He lost some, and he won some. But he never lost in a way that really hurt the team - and when he won, he won. Let`s put it this way: he may lose a trade/signing/pick but he hardly ever looks stupid doing so (or he looks stupid at first and proves the doubters wrong later). He is great at acquiring assets - probably the best in the business. He has a knack to get good 2nd rounders. And he is always active, probably offering more deals than any other GM. And all of that makes him the best GM in the business.
The luck here was extremely by consequence, and a situation like this will likely never present itself ever again in the NBA, as it never has before. Even though you can argue Manu in SA. When a small market team has 3 stars and will not pay all 3 the max let alone have one come off the bench. Like I said SA was luck Manu made that decision but the second Harden got here him and his beard was on every billboard and he's easily the best SG in the league right now, a top scorer and a max player. Something OKC couldn't offer. Very unique circumstances that presented itself here.
Being a an NBA GM is 80% luck; the rest is being prepared/in position to act on good fortune. Presti was a good GM with a good amount of luck until he got some bad luck with Westbrook going down and all of sudden he gets exposed. a Good trade that "was good for both teams" was all of a sudden a massive mistake.
How do you know that? Are you drawing your conclusion based on their stats with their current teams? Does that mean they put up the same stats here? How do they play with Lowry and/or Dragic? How does K Martin play wth two bigs like that? So many questions and factors that play into that. So there is no way you can say we would have been screwed. I'm jus sayin....
I concur. One we get those stars he will stop acquiring "assets" to make bigger moves and just focus on building depth. Seems like people are passing judgement because of all the moves he makes. Its a means to a end.
