Welcoming Harden who's coming on June 12, 2013 (UTC+8), Nike Taiwan just uploaded this profile video. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/D_an1o_3PdY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Spoiler http://www.tsna.com.tw/index.php?q=node/43152 (in Chinese) .
Agree if you mean at a top tier/elite level. But he is decent in all of those areas. If he is willing to work hard, improve, and study lots of film, I think that he still has room to grow. In the one year he got consistent minutes (2009-2010), he put up 14 and 8 per 36, with 37% 3-point shooting and 80% FT shooting. Those are numbers that any of our young PFs would be hard pressed to match next year. On top of that, playing with unselfish team-oriented guys like Lin and Harden would only boost his morale and willingness to put in the hard work. He has done well on the international stage when he has been on teams on which he felt comfortable. He was on some doggone terrible teams in Milwaukee, NJ, and Washington. Dallas' team was good but coming in midseason he did not get enough PT to be in the rotation.
Yi has more size to bother people inside defensively than any of our four young PF's and more shooting range than any of them at this point (though our guys could all develop and improve). Many things in Yi's game warrant improvement, no doubt, but my point is that he has never been in a good system to develop, and he has shown the work ethic and talent to be worth a flyer.
Yi has always had the talent and the tools, but a Stromile Swift-like basketball intelligence and court awareness. If he could put it together, he would be an impact player, but it's a long shot that he can put it together.
You mention Yi's per 36 stats earlier... well aren't Jones numbers better everywhere? and he is nearly 5 years younger. Sure Yi's has tons of talent but so do our current crop of PF's.
Yi is mentally soft. Someone with his skillset and talent should be able to hold down a spot in an nba team SOMEWHERE. But someone on cfs stated that even Yao questioned his desire and application to the game. He absolutely dominated the Gasol/Gasol/Ibaka frontline at the last Olympics, he has talent, but year after year of inconsistency in terms of application and production have lent to this happening.
Honestly I don't think he enjoyed his stay in the NBA. He is probably feeling good enough being the biggest star in the CBA, and he doesn't really need the NBA. There are a lot of international players who have the talents playing in the NBA but may not have the desire to do so. Yi could be one of those players.
