    Interview at Linsanity premiere

    Hey,

I was at the SXSW premiere of Linsanity, care of Playmaker Magazine. (I'm the guy in the blue hat interviewing Jeremy in the pic a few posts above. Haha.) Here's a few notes about the film:

    1) The documentary is incredible and shows how much faith carried Jeremy and his family throughout his journey as a budding NBA star.

    2) There's no Rockets footage, unfortunately. The climax of the movie really is in his time as a Knick. My favorite part was him showing up Kobe.

    3) The producers said they are knee deep in distribution talks. I expect it to be an ESPN 30 for 30 feature soon. It's that good.

Anyway, here are a few red carpet interviews. As a Rockets fan, it was awesome. We even gave some Knicks fans a hard time about losing to us in the NBA Finals.

how did the blacks do it then?

The blacks back 50 years ago probably faced the same thing in movies. So how did they manage to break free from that stereotype? That should be a road map for Asian Americans. ;)

Sure thing, Caris. From our interview after and some of his answers to other writers, I got the impression his time with Houston has been sort of shaky. He told us that the Rockets as a team are trying to be consistent in their efforts, because that's what the great teams do. As it is, they have great nights and then nights when they look awful.

As far as the film, it really shows a side of Jeremy I had never seen before and greatly illustrates just how many things had to fall into place for him to get where he is (ex. the NBA lockout caused teams to play back-to-back-to-back games, which provided him one last chance to play for New York since the starters were exhausted.) Loved the film and hope he stays with Houston for a while. We all know with DM that nothing's a certainty. Haha.

Lin's entire basketball career has been shaky. I also hope he'll stay with Houston for a while. If not, his journey taught me not to be worried, it may well be for the best. ;)

What was your impression about the audience's reception of the film?

    Great point, Caris. :)

The audience seemed to enjoy the film. When Evan and the producers came up for the Q&A after, there was a round of applause. When they then introduced Jeremy, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. It was a very powerful moment and I think a lot of people will gain inspiration from the documentary.

Standing Ovation. WOW. Considering the composition of the audience - media, critics, entertainment industry people, and film snobs (according to Tinman) - that is impressive. Can't wait to watch it for myself.

Please remember to post your future coverage of the film here.

I think it's mainly the fault of uncreative and money-paranoid studio execs. They're all wrapped up in the idea that audiences are too stupid/racist to empathize with characters of different races. But you could be a Saudi Arabian lesbian atheist who hates sports and STILL love this documentary because it has a great protagonist and a great story. That's all that matters.

"The blacks"?? What part of the country do you live in? I'm guessing you aren't near the coasts.

"How do you tell a story everybody knows?" he asks. "Everyone knows he got cut, and that nobody wanted him in college, and then he became this huge success. What we had was footage no one else had. It was not the Jeremy on ESPN and in interviews. We had so much footage from his childhood. I think I have, like, two hours from my childhood. Jeremy has around 80 hours. They filmed everything."

I might watch it if they ever put it on tv, his story is interesting and that would make the documentary a good one.

It's said that there's a lot of NBA behind the scene footage. I'm also interested to see his time with GSW.
