It was in 'Money Ballsy', the Sports Illustrated article of Chris Ballard: Earlier I'd asked Alexander, the owner, about Morey's approach, and he had been cagey. How much longer would Alexander stick with the plan? "As long as it works." How long until he knew if it worked? "Two years." As for how he would know if it worked, Alexander was clear: Like Morey, he only plays this game for one reason. On the SI Vault website, it's 6 pages long. This quote is from page 6. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1206495/6/index.htm
If I may add, every Rockets fan should read the Money Ballsy article. Gives us a peek into the mind of our GM. Another great read, although it's dated already, is the article on Shane Battier, the No-Stats All-Star in New York Times. It gives us an inkling into the kind of measurements the Rockets stats office values. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/15/magazine/15Battier-t.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0
Why does water always decide to backsplash when we drop deuces in dirty public bathrooms, and never at home?
Hmmmm... The question I think we all want to know but no one has asked is, "Who are the next star-caliber players you are targeting and who are you willing to trade to get them." I really want to know this badly so if anyone has any insights on this, HELP!!!
1) You've talked about how success comes from better data, not better analysis. If you can't comment on what actual data is collected, can you comment on whether (and how) the data that you have available to you give an answer that is exponentially better than any complex analysis possible on what's publicly available that it makes them practically obsolete? What is the disparity? Is it marginally/exponentially better? 2) Do you look at (and perhaps laugh at) the fervor and conviction some fans seem to have in discussions using publicly available (and limited or incomplete) data and analysis using them? What is the most common mistake that you've seen fans make in their statistical arguments? 3) Do you or the Rockets collect data on the refs and/or inform the game plan based on who the refs are? If you do collect them, is there any consistency in terms of how refs perform across games (being able to make the right call or consistently not calling certain types)? If you don't, why not? 4) You've mentioned that you follow SC2, are you also familiar with dota (supposedly Lin plays it)? If you had to pick a dota character for each player, who would they be (e.g. Harden -> Axe for ability to draw fouls, Lin -> Riki for ability to use screens, etc)? 5) You've been blamed for not having discovered/seen/predicted Lin's talents last year. What sample size does your analytical methods need to sufficiently say whether a player is good? It's probably easier to measure or see if a player is a good finisher, how do you evaluate if a player is a good decision maker? 6) Do you worry that your methods are so effective that other GMs deal with you with a certain level of cynicism and distrust? Does your success make other GMs more cautious about their dealings with you? Do you find that other GMs use you to fish for which of their players are worth keeping based on your inquiries?

I would like to ask him how he feels about all the fans who are unable to see the team due to the CSN deal. Speaking specifically of the people who live outside the Houston area who can't get Comcast like in the Beaumont area. Do the even care that fans can't see the games?

Sent Daryl some of these questions in here. He answered one. Harden deal could not exist w/o the Toronto pick.
