I just got home from the game here in Portland completely disgusted at what I saw. There is no reason whatsoever for this loss. You could of heard a pin drop in the Rose Garden for the fans knew the Rockets had this one in the bag.

I have tried to keep my personal expectations low for this season but throwing games due to bad coaching gets me all fired up.

As a lifelong Rocket fan, let me break down what I see in this team.

#1 The future is bright. We finally have a true center that is a rebound machine, converts around the basket, has a good motor, decent free throw stroke, and looks to be durable for the long term. If Asik is not manning the middle, this current Rockets team would lose 80% of its games. His prowess is allowing the guards to streak for fast break 'cause they know he'll get the board. The fast break attack is one of the strong suits of this team regardless of the conversion rate. This fact alone had this game won if not for ISO ball being run at the end of the game.

#2 Jeremy Lin is a solid point guard. He may not be Goran or Kyle, but he's a step up over Rafer, Aaron, and the others. He doesn't need extreme athleticism for his ball IQ is pretty high. He attacks, makes good decisions, plays the right way. I watched him at the shootaround and his shot is good. He appears to be lacking in confidence. He was also the last guy on the court tonight waiting for all his other teammates when most guys would have been in the lockeroom steamed that they didn't get to play in the overtime. He's going to be a solid guard for years to come. We should be happy to have him.

#3 Marcus Morris. Look out Chandler. This dude is gunning for your job. Tonight Chandler got burned on some crucial plays. Particularly, screen and rolls off of Batum and Lillard with Lin. His defense seems inconsistent and Morris might be a better lock to start with Chandler as the 6th man.
Either way the SF is a lock with these two.

#4 Patrick Patterson has got to go. He is Maurice Taylor v.2.0. BHE = Black Hole Extraordinaire. Looks like Hercules, got a sometime sweet J, and is soft as the Charmin Bunny. I truly think he's getting burn for a possible trade. Once TJ steps on the court it's gonna be over. I used to go see TJ's high school games and have watched his growth and it's off the charts. He will be the long term solution at PF. No doubt about it. TJ is naturally gifted with a knack of being in the right place at the right time. He will put up huge numbers and you won't even realize it. D Mo can back him up.

#5 Toney Douglas. This guy is a junkyard dog and I mean junk. He is a master bricklayer. He makes Lin airballs a thing of beauty. Mr. TD can play D, hustle, and that's it. He's got shaky handles and is a complete minus on the offensive end. He runs around like a chicken with his head cut off.
At this point you could run Royce White as the 2nd/3rd string point with better results. I'm not joking..

#6 ISO HERO BALL has got to stop in crunch time. Just cause we have James Harden doesn't mean you abandon the team game. If you are getting leads in games playing team ball why would you stop when the game gets tight in the last 3 minutes. Every team in the league now knows that Harden is going to go ISO. There is absolutely no reason for Harden to bring up the ball if Lin is on the court. With Lin controlling the ball the spacing is much better and usually great things happen when James has his feet set and doesn't have to force the issue. I hope this coaching staff fixes this or we're going to lose a lot of winnable games in the mold of the Steve Francis - Moochie Norris years.

Did the foul on Asik's dunk - look as bad as it did on TV?

Hopefully someone has it saved so they can share it with everyone when they said that. I was shaking my head when they showed the slowmo replay and they STILL claimed it as a good block.

Random comment -- in that play at 38 seconds of 4th quarter, Asik gets a pass from Lin and takes it up at the rim and gets blocked/fouled by Batum. (Asik was fouled but didn't get the call.)
Actually, Asik was WIDE open while cutting to the basket before that, but Chandler had blinders on and totally missed him -- see the screenshot below. Instead, Chandler passes it to Lin who finally passes it to Asik.

Now the big question is ~ do you think the coaches will realize they need to revert back to the offensive leadership and vision of Lin that they nuked from outside earth's atmosphere. The oneeee that was still in place in the first 2 games of the season.

Signs of a young team, for sure. But that game was imminently winnable.

Sampson's decision to sit Lin was crazy. As I'm sure everybody on here has noticed, Lillard only really burned Lin on one play (the jumper on the left hand side). What he had contributed up to that point (drawing a charge on Batum, hitting Harden on a three, and otherwise playing very good D on Lillard up to that point) should have been enough to keep him in the game.

We can lament things like Omer's inability to finish the dunk or draw a foul, or Harden's tendency to overdribble, too. In time, the team will find its way.

Some people just can't see it because they've never experienced it growing up. They might have encountered it once or twice but to feel it almost every day is something else.

Under D'Antoni and Woodson, Lin took 20+ and 13+ shots.
Now, he has 8-10 only.

How does the Rox number crunchers reconcile tonight's stat sheet? Do they use Sampson as a footnote to why the team's starting PG, on his way to a triple double, was benched because Sampson "thought" that Douglas would be a better defender on a guy who was lighting it up no matter who was guarding him? How does a coach make the excuse that Douglas, a lesser defender, is to replace your starting PG with all around better skills, performing as well as he had tonight, because he "thought" Douglas would be able to better defend Lillard? Because Douglas was more verbose and said he could keep Lillard out of the paint?! What a mess. Just sad.

Question, can someone tell me if Lin was disobeying and driving to the lane to make plays? Or was that Sampson trying invest more in him? Those were my original questions, since Lin started looking more explosive again. But then he gets benched for OT, so my question is, wth?

If Harden hadn't picked up 4 fouls and had to sit a while, Lin probably wouldn't have had as much of a chance to run the offense. In other words, Lin got to play PG more bc Sampson didn't have a choice in the matter.

The problem with this approach in terms of defense is that it LOOKS good, but it's actually MORE ineffective.

Lin's approach to defense is similar to Battier's... he doesn't try to out jump you, or out speed you, he moves his body to cut off lanes, he stays in front to funnel you to bad shooting spots, and he bodies up or sags back to give you the lowest percentage shots.

It's why Lillard had ZERO assists going into the 4th quarter.

All TD can do is try to deflect a pass. Lin however plays a more cerebral (and statistically more effective) form of defense.

Let's do a basic math exercise.

If you reduce a shooter over 10 shots from 50% to 40%, they score 18 instead of 20 points.

However, a SINGLE steal has the SAME impact as 10% reduction over 10 shots. Lin gets 2.5 steals PER GAME.

Now, to get an idea of how HUGE that is in terms of reducing an opponents ability to score, let's take a look at Lin's defensive plays.

According to Synergy Sports....

Over 9 games, Lin was involved in 117 Defensive plays. This includes direct isolation defense, defense of the PnR ball handler, help defense, and other defense related moves.

Over those 117 Defensive plays, he stole the ball 21 Times. Think about that... about 1/6 times he defends someone he STEALS the ball.

That means 21/117 times the Opponent gets a BIG FAT ZERO on that play.

By virtue of his quick hands, he automatically reduces the shooting percentage of his opponents by approximately 17.9%.

On TOP of that he has 6 BLOCKS. Big fat ZERO's for the opponents.

Toss in his ability to drive players to the right spots, stay in front of his defender, fight over picks, his willingness to take charges, AND his good rotation defense and you have a borderline ELITE defender.

How Good is his Defense?

According to Synergy Sports, Lin allows 0.71 Points per Possession... good enough as of tonight to rank him as 49th in the NBA. That's 49th out of ALL positions, NOT among PG's... in a league with 400+ players, MOST of whom are bigger, Longer AND Stronger than him.

Where does Toney Douglas rank?

0.87 ... good enough for 151st in the League. Or above average.

That said, Toney waves his arms alot.
