They said it has the *potential of being the perfect storm. But it seems like it was being blown out of proportion due to the anticipation. It was too early to call, they got it wrong.

Got home last night around 7:30 PM. Flight was an hour late leaving Newark Liberty airport. Flights started getting cancelled about an hour after we left.

Knocking on wood here, but as of right now I still have power and no water in the basement. State ordered all the public schools in the state to close and a friend of mine down the shore said all of his streets are flooded.

    Ok...

-It is a category 1 hurricane.
-It will be interacting with a cold front which will inject energy into Sandy.
-Also, an arctic air coming in from Canada. (Blizzard conditions)
-It is a HUGE storm which is creating a HUGE wind field which will be increasing the storm surge.
-It will be hitting during high tide.
-It will be hitting a dense population that depend heavily on mass transportation.

If there weren't other factors involved then it would be just a minimal hurricane. NY/NJ area is not as prepared as us down in the south. This is almost similar to Hurricane Ike except the winter conditions. I remember that people were downplaying Ike because it was just a cat 1. It had a devastating storm surge.

Right now, Sandy is 90mph sustained winds, gusts to 115mph.

I was watching Good morning america and New York Harbor is already swelling up. I hope for the best that the damage will be minimal.

Making landfall over Galveston, at 2:10 a.m. CDT[2] on 13 September 2008, "giant" Hurricane Ike caused extensive damage in Texas, with sustained winds of 110 mph (175 km/h), a 22 ft (6.8 m) storm surge, and widespread coastal flooding.

I just flew from Iceland to DC last night. Was hoping my flight would get canceled so I could spend more time in Iceland. It's barely drizzling here at the moment.

Just to think, this thing is still 12 hours or so away from landfall. Going to be a long night for those people.
