Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day A good friend once told me that when it seems that music starts sounding generic, always look to the past. Food for thought.
Sand Rubies - s/t The original band name was The Sidewindlers. They are from Arizona. I saw them twice live in Austin. The first time I heard them live I had never heard of them, but immediately knew that they were a grear act.
Zac Maloy-Life. He's the former lead singer of The Nixons. Saw him last night at the Galaxy Club here in Dallas.
Tough to say, but I'd have to pick: Devon - Long Sleeve Story Devon is a singer/guitarist/songwriter from Virginia. She's earned many Charlottesville Accolades, and has been very well-received by critics. She's got kindof a folksy/rock/blues style that is very unique. I've seen her live in Louisiana, and she is very cool, and a great live performer. "Long Sleeve Story" is her second release, the self-titled "Devon" is her first. They are both good, but I think "Long Sleeve Story" is even better than "Devon". It was produced by DMB bass player Stefan Lessard -- that's how I found out about her. I've been hooked ever since. You can find out more about her at http://www.devonmusic.com
Two albums came out this past year that I love that are fairly under recognized. Ben Kweller "Sha Sha" and Death in Vegas' "Scorpio Rising."
Well...some people know about it of course, but I'll say East River Pipe, The Gasoline Age. East River Pipe is really just some dude who records his music using his own equipment in his NYC apartment. Although, he must have pretty expensive equipment, because the sound isn't half bad. Basically, the guy is just a great song writer.
Elvis, I have heard of Death in Vegas but didn't know that they had a new album out. I have "Dead Elvis" (lol, ironic title in addressing someone known as Elvis) but I don't listen to it much. My pick would have to be "Conjure One" by Conjure One. This is the project by Rhys Fulber former partner to Bill Leeb in Front Line Assembly and Delerium. If you like the Delerium and Enigma stuff, then you would like Conjure One.
I can never say what my favorite is. It depends what I'm doing and the mood. In the order of unlikeliness that anyone knows about them Eat -- Sell Me a God (I'd be floored if anyone has this) Paul Ubana Jones -- I Need a Storm (this is a solo album) Up Bustle and Out -- Light'em Up and Blow'em Out Carlinhos Brown -- alfagamabetizado Snakefinger -- All the ablums Sky Cries Mary -- Exit at the Axis in the order of favorite Carlinhos Brown <-- a must buy Sky Cries Mary <-- best of its genre, imo Snakefinger <-- imo, the best guitar player ever Up Bustle and Out <-- This is actually very good Eat <-- Fun and clever Paul Ubana Jones <-- unique and incredible voice
The last two Death in Vegas albums after "Dead Elvis" have been really great, in my opinion. The guys in the band are developing into really good songwriters. Check out "The Contino Sessions," the follow up to "Dead Elvis." Iggy Pop guests on one track called "Aisha" and delivers one the spookiest songs of all time (and a great video to match). I think you would like this album, Manny.
"Spice World" by The Spice Girls . . . Oh wait. I thought this thread was about our favorite album that no one else knows is our favorite album (ya know, like our own dirty little musical secret) Carry on!
