Maybe I am missing something here but why is Morey stubbornly offering 3 year contracts(Lin, Asik, Dragic)? I remember reading from somewhere that this is the reason why Dragic decided to leave because he wanted a longer term. What kind of plan does Morey have in mind? Is there someone in the FA that he is trying to persue in 2015? Would be great if someone can post a list of free agents.
Morey tends to only give longer terms to superstars. This is in line with what he always does and would have nothing to do with planning a FAgency splash in 2015. btw: Morey did offer Dragic 4 years. He just didn't fully guarantee the 4th like PHO did. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.
You need 3 years to obtain a player's bird rights. As for Goran, it wasn't so much that it was a 4th year as it was that the 4th year was to be a player's option. A player option never works out for the team. Either the player lives up the contract and will opt out to get more money or he won't play as well as anticipated/and or get hurt and he will opt in. The 3 year deals with Asik and Lin are perfect because they establish bird rights with the Rockets but they don't lock us in to long term deals that hamper us down the road.
I think with the new CBA many teams will be in cap hell in 2015 .. we need to build our young core and stay flexible .. It is almost as if he is managing this team in 3 year intervals. Every 3 years he has a ton of cap room to reevaluate his options with the players he has as well as free agents. i think it might actually be a good approach.
Easier to trade than 4th year player options. Think about how fast he swaps his roster, he only signs trade able contracts.
Asik and Lin were signed to three year deal to make that 3rd year as toxic as possible. If either guy would have signed for the same annually amount for 4 years, years 3 and 4 wouldn't have been nearly as toxic.
Re: Lin & Asik, the three years makes it more difficult to match than four. And average yearly salary.
Dragic wanted 4th year player option which is difficult to trade. I believe Lin's deal has 4th year team option like they wanted to do with Dragic. It's only for around $4m as you can only have that spike in the 3rd year.
I believe you are right, but the real problem with the Phoenix deal is that it includes a player option.
These are role players to you? Rajon Rondo Tony Parker LaMarcus Aldridge Kevin Love Marc Gasol Chris Bosh (player option) LeBron James (player option)
The deals all have 4th year team options. They just aren't talked about as much for some reason. He won't guarantee them to stay flexible.
Dragic wanted a 4th year to be HIS option. Meaning if he's balling it up after 3 years and in big demand, he can bolt and sign a bigger contract elsewhere. If on the other hand, after 3 years he's had two knee surgeries and is hooked on crack and can't see any serious PT at all, he can take that 4th year at $8million and buy more crack, and thus screw the team. The team's policy is now not to give player options on contracts, regardless of the length of the contract -- except to franchise-cornerstone types. Morey has no doubt run the numbers and determined that more often than not, player options blow up in the team's face. So he's gotta tell Dragic no or next year some other less-deserving guy will also want a player option. It may hurt in this particular case (Dragic), but in the long term, it sounds like a policy that will help the team more than hurt it.
Hmmm...besides Kevin Love, Marc Gasol and keeping Parsons, I don't really see anyone worth perusing. Thanks for posting the list up! That clears up. I didn't know there was a 4th year team option in Morey's offer. I guess everything makes sense now.
