If we get Gasol, we can throw a max contract at his brother in Memphis if we are able to unload Dragic, Scola, and Martin; right?

If that is the case, would Memphis have the ability to match a max offer?

Memphis has said they won't match any contract if Gasol doesnt want to be there and he said he doesn't (take that with a grain of salt)

Randolph, Gay and Gasol's contracts would completely cap them out. I just don't think they can do a max deal and still turn a profit.

I think the Rockets and Hornets restructuring this trade is going to mean LA has to take back a bad contract or two (possibly from both teams) as well as including their own picks. If that is the case and we can dump one of our bad contracts on them then we can amnesty someone else and have more money to spend on free agency.

Where would you rather be right now: on a team that is a legit contender for the title or one that is rebuilding?

    Can't say I blame him.

I wonder what the changes are, and If they benefit/hurt us in any way. It is hard to imagine us giving up anything more than we already have.

    Incoming Rockets
    Pau Gasol

    Incoming Hornets
    Luis Scola
    Lamar Odom
    Courtney Lee
    Chase Budinger
    Goran Dragic
    Draft picks...

    Incoming Lakers
    Hasheem Thabeet
    Chris Paul
    Jarrett Jack
    Jordan Hill

This makes more sense in a few ways.

    A. We get to keep Kevin Martin, while clearing about the same amount of space for Nene.
    B. The Lakers have to take back some bigger contracts, as they should. They also pick up a power forward in Jordan Hill, but lose flexibility with Hasheem Thabeet and Jarrett Jack who make 5 million a piece.
    C. The Hornets miss out on Martin, but they get significantly younger, cheaper and more flexible with Lee/Budinger instead.

    We would have something like...

    1. Kyle Lowry
    2. Kevin Martin
    3. Terrence Williams
    4. Pau Gasol
    5. Nene
    -------------------------
    Patrick Patterson
    Jonny Flynn
    Chandler Parsons

Taking Martin out of the deal would fix several problems. New Orleans would be taking back talented young players on cheap contracts instead, and the Lakers would get dumped with a few of the more expensive guys that probably aren't worth their billing, two things that the owners were pissing about. As far as I can tell, we would free up the same amount of money for Nene, and get to keep Martin. Would New Orleans take Lee and Budinger instead of Martin? Would the Lakers swallow Thabeet and Jack to get Paul?

I bet him and Paul will clash at one point or another. The Lakers are obviously trying to prepare for a new era and Kobe is just going to either have to accept that or well...whine about it...

Thats one way of looking at it. On the other hand, where would you rather be on a team that doesn't want you or appreciate you or on a team that wants you and where you have a chance to prove your true worth? Life is always a matter of attitude, the glass is half-empty or half-full.

I think he was saying that the extra players included in that hypothetical add up to about the same salary martin makes and we'd get under the cap by about the same amount. So in theory, yeah.

Exactly, and the Lakers have to take back some crappy contracts, since they are getting the best player in the deal.

Would New Orleans take Courtney Lee and Chase Budinger, instead of Martin?

Maybe one of our overseas rookies as well?

We need to find a way that will prevent them from taking so much cash. That cash needs to be dumped on the Lakers instead.

For the Lakers, Kwame Brown + Lamar Odom = Chris Paul

Looks like the Rockets want to tank this year. Sad.

IIRC, part of the way the Rockets were going to clear money for the FA signing was to amnesty Thabeet after trading for Gasol.

If we trade him as part of a package for Gasol, we don't have his salary to amnesty. Therefore, in the proposed trade we wouldn't have as much money to sign a FA unless there is someone else with a $5 mil salary that you want to replace him with as your amnesty cut.

beyond ugly trade for Rox. I would send out Scola and Martin each for 1st pick instead and TANK, TANK, TAKN for the better future

There is no better timing for tanking
