I didn't know anything existed to the east of I-45. I am intrigued.

I live in Northshore. If the presence of minorities frightens you (my neighborhood is a fairly even split between Hispanic and black with less than 5 percent white) then you probably want to steer well away. Especially if you automatically assume groups of young men in urbanwear are "up to no good".

I have never had any "trouble" in 12 years and I walk in my neighborhood at night with some degree of regularity. Lot's of reasonably priced and reasonably well maintained apartments and rental property in the area.

In fairness, there have been a couple attempts to break into my brothers car....and he lives in one of the apartment complexes on Normandy.

My neighbors are friendly, maintain their yards and there are a lot of places to eat out here. (Taquerias and Wing Places predominate, but there are lots of other options too).

I work off of I-10 East and Federal but live in Midtown. My commute to work is 20 minutes, going the opposite way of traffic every day.

    East Downtown!

EaDo is where it's at. Lofts at the Ballpark. You can walk to Minute Maid Park, GRB, Toyota Center, Dynamo Stadium, Discovery Green, Warehouse Live, Lucky's Pub and Little Woodrow's East End. And soon there will be a light rail you can take into downtown. And then take it midtown all the way to Reliant.

Still in the eastside Major? Got out of there since '07. I remember I found out you were on that side too back when I was still there and there was a thread talking about "Pofolks" :)

Lots of changes from what I hear from people I know that still lives there. From the new shopping center off of Woodforest/Beltway, to HEB shutting down, and from when I was last down there, the Blockbuster in the Foodtown shopping center shutdown :(

I just saw this poverty map on chron.com yesterday. I guess if it matters to him, it could help.

LonghornFan's suggestion of Midtown is great, if your friend wants to rent for a year and get a feel for the city. The rent is pretty high.

A few guys mentioned Clearlake area. I would feel safer here, if he has kids. The commute along 45 is not far to the 610 loop, but the traffic is worse than a reverse commute on I10. A little rain or an accident can have you sitting an extra 15-20 minutes than normal. It's not too bad, if you leave before 7 AM.

Ha. There was a shoot out yesterday in the Foodtown parking lot.

As for the OP, I agree with everyone else. Tell him to look elsewhere. I grew up off 10 East right outside the loop and know the entire area to the beltway. There are pockets of good and really bad areas. If money is an issue, I don't think you can find cheaper without getting really dangerous, but it is not the place to be. There is nothing out here. Clear Lake is too far though. Midtown, Heights, would make for a shorter commute and he'd be near all the action. For reference it takes me 20 minutes to get to Montrose in the morning going WITH traffic.

Grew up there from 1981-1998 and it's shocking how much more new development there is. Back then I think the "good" neighborhoods were basically Whispering Pines, Country Club, Lakewood and Pinehurst. The thing is you just didn't live there unless you worked at the Refinery or in the near east; it's just such a long trek and I imagine you could find similar communities closer in.

I think he'd be safe in Baytown if it's under 3 years.. Any longer than that his children may start growing new limbs.
