Rockets name Kelvin Sampson as lead assistant, hire J.B. Bickerstaff as assistant.

Rockets have to have one of the brightest coaching staffs in the league... very driven, very motivated.... but the issue from my perspective is can the co-exist. Finch, McHale and Sampson all have alpha personalities.... and Finch and Sampson are known for being stubborn.

 

This post is hilarious to me. Not because of its humor value in of itself, but because I'm imagining all the slow people's reactions to it.

Not that those teams have had much success lately...

 

I'm torn to say the least on the hiring. I'm a huge IU basketball fan and Sampson really hurt the program. I will never forgive him for the damage he did, breaking NCAA rules, not making players go to class and so on.

As far as the Rockets go, I think Sampson will help. KA gets a lot out of players, so that's fine. Problem is, I don't really see him sticking around long enough to have real success. You may say, he's just an asst., problem is with this staff, it's much more than that.

I probably would have went harder after Jeorger, my thinking being, he's a strong defensive coach and may also stay longer.

 

With all the praise and rave we are hearing about McHale's leadership and communication skills, McHale seems like the perfect guy to be in charge of those two.

 

LOL why? Football coaching staffs seem to do quite well with this structure, and unlike the NBA the NFL has 30+ players to manage instead of only 15.

NFL is not a constant motion sport. One set a guys plays offense, the other set plays defense. One team runs onto the field and the other runs off. It is no comparison. I don't think Soccer and Hockey have two coordinators either; at least, not like the NFL.

Defensive Coordinator!?!?!?!? Bickerstaff and Sampson are hired because partly of their color, their ability to handle players and teach players. I seriously doubt both are hired because they possess defensive wizardry. Sampson will be good for the Rockets in recruiting the biggest name in free-agency just like he did in college. Bickerstaff is hired most likely of his name, so I'm not sold on him. McHale would need their expertise when KMart is complaining about playing time, KLow is struggling and the rookies having problem with too many friends wanting money.

Clear money grab! Non-basketball move. You lose Yao Ming, you need to make up the revenue. No more China sponsor. J.B. Bickerstaff appeals to African American fans. Kelvin Sampson is Native American Indian and will bring significant sponsors from the casino sector and the convenience store sector. Maybe even some of those high tech Bollywood call centers, too.

are any of the new hires better for our team than the previous assistant staff?
Turner used to be our "defensive coordinator" and now he is going to do it in Phoenix. I bet Suns fans are saying: "what a great hire, the Rockets have been top 5 in defensive efficiency in the last X years... etc"

Something really dodgy would've been to do a hush-hush deal with these candidates and not officially hire them (so the Rox don't get fined by the league) and have them work with the young-ins during the lock out.

 

By the way. I just looked it up the numbers. The Bulls most efficient overall defensive team last season, however they were just 17th in transition defense, so it's certainly not a necessity in being a good defensive team.

The Bulls below average transition defense can be explained by their turnover rate (17th) and offensive rebound rate (4th).

If Kahn is working the "father-son" angle, Morey needs to work the "You have to work for David ****ing Kahn" angle.

 

That should be more than enough of an angle. Morey should just call up JB and be like, "Do you really want to work for an organization ran by Kahn? I mean, this is Kahn we are talking about here. This is the guy that drafted 3 PG's, a guy that was ineligible for the draft, and ridiculed both publicly and privately on a daily basis for being a terrible GM."
