The nba needs to get rid of when the the player jumps into a player and gets the foul. I hate it when wade does it and when kevin durant does it and pretty much any player who does it. It is hard to root for a player who does this move and get FT out of it.
Agreed. Jumping in the air calling Time out while going out of bounds needs to stop too. Rocket River
It's really the Paul Pierce rule. The follow through the defenders arm is the Durant rule. Kevin Martin is pretty good at both though.
It is a good rule only when the offensive player jumps straight up and still catches contact. If the offensive player has to jump forward to initiate contact, then it should not be a foul IMHO.
Problem is, it is the defenders' responsibility to stay OUT of contact. They should be jumping straight up or have their hands up. If you jump towards the offensive player to contest the shot better, it is also your fault if you fall for a pumpfake. This rule is probably never going to change. A lot of players draw fouls off pump fakes in the post, and a lot of players create contact during fastbreaks. It's not a big deal in my opinion. Play better defense, and respect the offense.
TextBook Defense doesn't help if the Offensive player can plow into you and flail about and get a foul call. The expectations of a person playing defense are just too high . . .. but just about every game/league tries to make it easier for teams to score more MLB NFL NBA .. .etc. Rocket River
If the defender has already left his feet, a jump shooter may not draw a foul by jumping forward into him. If the shooter goes straight up and defender knocks into him, then its the defender's fault. I don't know why the NBA doesn't just clarify the rule in that way. It would get rid of a lot of cheap fouls, and consequentially improve the flow of the game.
If you wouldn't do it or call it in a pickup game, it shouldn't be called a foul in the NBA. Here's a half-baked idea; considering the NBA is already playing games outside, how about 1 pre-season game where the players referee themselves. Standard pickup rules; offensive player calls the foul, no freethrows, just a reset of the shot clock to 24 and ball out of bounds. No charges or blocks allowed, ignore 3 second calls, if there's an argument about a call, a single NBA ref comes in and throws a jump ball at center court (at least they'd get lots of practice for the real season). Carrying, traveling, illegal picks would all continue to not be enforced, except for the players yelling at each other to knock it off. I would definitely pay to see that in person, if only to see who are the biggest crybabies in the league, and who really needs the whistle to succeed.
Steve Francis used to do it. Wade used to do it a lot. Now defenders don't even bother and just let him drive by. I agree wholeheartedly the "creating contact" thing needs to stop. It's just ugly basketball and totally unfair.
Agree. This. +1. "Like". Putting a defender in the air, then just torpedoing yourself into the defenders chest is just sloppy and cheap. At the same time, its seen as a GOOD thing then an INTERIOR player can use pump fakes and draw fouls by going through player's arms. But its so much more obvious on the perimeter.
How about don't try to block a jumpshot and just contest. Which is the primary reason why defenders are getting called for the foul here. Regardless of whether he shoots, if he pump fakes and drives around the defender, who is airborne mind you, the idiot who jumped to block the shot is still at fault here. That being said, if it's obvious that the offensive player barrels into the defender; then call an offensive foul. In gist, keep it as it is.
The Kidd/Durant play was a perfect example as to why they should make this rule. Kidd lines up for a 3 and Durant runs from inside the paint to the 3 pt line as he jumps and tries to avoid Kidd, Kidd jumps right into him and they called the foul on Durant. It is clearly an offensive foul if anything.
