    Dislocated finger sidelines Norris
    By JONATHAN FEIGEN

Moochie Norris, the only Rocket to play in every game last season, will be out for an estimated three weeks after suffering a dislocated right pinkie finger that was so severe it required surgery.

    Karen Warren / Chronicle
Rockets guard Moochie Norris grimaces in pain as trainer Keith Jones helps him off the court after Norris suffered a dislocated pinkie in the first half of Tuesday night's game.

"He dislocated it, and I could not reduce it (pop it back into place)," Rockets trainer Keith Jones said. "Sometimes you can do it with normal pulling. I tried to reduce it on the court. The doctor tried to reduce it in the locker room. We sent him to a hand specialist, and he tried to reduce it. We had to go with an open reduction (surgery)."

With Steve Francis out with tendinitis in his right foot, Norris played the first six minutes of Tuesday night's 96-93 exhibition win over the Spurs before he was hurt fighting for a loose ball.

"It's definitely tough, especially after what we went through last year," Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley said. "The only good thing is at least it's preseason. We'll be there supporting him, but right now, that's shocking to me."

The Rockets play Thursday in Phoenix and Friday in St. Charles, Mo. The regular season begins in two weeks.

"They had to do more than they usually do," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It was not an easy one, so he's going to be out for a while. That's too bad. Hopefully, Steve will be back. I don't know if he will play all of these games, but I expect him back some. And the young boys (Tierre Brown and Tito Maddox) will get a shot at it."

Mooch will probably be on the IR. Tierre gets his chance... If Tierre looks good we may be able to trade him for a pick when Mocch comes back. As it was he probably would have been cut to join another team.

just curious if anyone knows exactly how it happened.

did his finger get caught in someone's shorts , like Calvin Murphy said? did he jam it into the ball? jam it on the floor trying to break his fall? i was watching on tv and all of a sudden i see moochie on the floor writhing in pain but didn't see how it happened.

Broken and dislocated fingers are aweful. When I broke the growth plate in my middle finger it hurt like anything. My sisters friend dislocated her finger a few days ago and she said that it hurt a lot. After like a day though they stop hurting. :D

When he was being walked off the court, you could see his pinky flexed laterally away from his hand. I cringed a bit looking at it.

Just remember, though, Roger Staubach probably had worse pinky fingers than all of us.

What would be worse, a fracture or a dislocation?

A fracture takes longer to heal, but usually heals up completely...

A dislocation doesn't put you out as long, but they seem to stick with you for a longer period of time, because you think it's healed when it's really not. Plus, you usually don't get the benefit of anesthetic when somebody is popping a joint back into place...

Calvin had mentioned Something to the effect of Mooch shooting w/ his left and dislocating the pinky on the right hand, so hopefully when he gets back it wont have a profound effect. Get well soon Mooch

I'm with you here, man (or woman).. I broke my thumb 3 weeks ago and had surgery last week. Of course, its my right (dominant) hand and it still hurts pretty good... Guess this will give me an opportunity to work on my left handed dribbling...

I don't know exactly whats wrong with my left pinky (luckily, I'm not a lefty.) but somethings wrong with it. I thought it was dislocated or broken, or sprained or someting, but I also read that a ligament may be...something or another. I remember hearing that if it was a ligament thing, which it may be, I would need surgery to correct it. I did this playing basketball, so this could be what happend to Moochie.

BTW, this happend back in March. It got swollen big time and hurt, but after a while it was ok. Its still not straight and it hurts to straighten it, but its not bother. I want to get it checked out, but my mom won't take me.

    Just my little story. :D

edit: oh yeah, I want to add that I messed it up right after I originally did this. About a week or so after I broke, dislocated, sprained it, I messed it up again. This could have made it worse. Maybe this could be the same with Mooch, as well.

I dislocated my pinkie playing basketball in H.S. during P.E. (gym class) went to catch a pass, the ball caught my pinkie and it popped out 90 degrees from normal... out of panic and first instincts, I just pushed the bone back into place, heard it pop into place and never played basketball again... After that I never took an interest in any kind of basketball until 92-93 (the first year I got into the Rockets.) Now I rarely play but watch it a lot!!
