You can see the data for every 5-man unit used by the Rockets here: http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits.php?year=2010-2011&team=HOU And below shows where some of the Rockets top used units fall relative to the other most used units around the league. The off, def, and net columns are unadjusted for opponent strength, and APM is adjusted for opponent strength. Take the adjusted ordering with a grain of salt, as you can see the standard errors are large. http://basketballvalue.com/topunits.php?year=2010-2011 The most used lineups that show up here are basically the starting 4 and then either Hayes, Miller, or Hill at C. team unit min off def net APM stderr DAL Kidd-Stevenson-Butler-Nowitzki-Chandler 257 121 97 +24 +24 8 LAL Fisher-Bryant-Artest-Gasol-Bynum 217 118 101 +18 +19 9 BOS Rondo-Allen-Pierce-Garnett-O'Neal 237 120 99 +20 +19 8 MIA Arroyo-Wade-James-Bosh-Anthony 175 114 95 +19 +17 9 ATL Bibby-Crawford-Johnson-Smith-Horford 160 126 109 +17 +17 10 LAL Blake-Brown-Barnes-Odom-Gasol 139 117 94 +23 +16 10 BOS Rondo-Allen-Pierce-Davis-Garnett 223 116 100 +16 +16 8 DAL Kidd-Terry-Butler-Nowitzki-Chandler 182 118 101 +16 +14 10 MIA Arroyo-Wade-James-Bosh-Ilgauskas 411 114 102 +12 +11 6 MEM Conley-Mayo-Gay-Arthur-Gasol 129 109 93 +16 +10 10 LAC Davis-Gordon-Gomes-Griffin-Jordan 269 121 110 +11 +9 8 POR Miller-Roy-Matthews-Aldridge-Camby 190 109 104 +5 +9 9 MEM Conley-Allen-Gay-Randolph-Gasol 151 109 100 +9 +8 10 IND Collison-Dunleavy-Granger-McRoberts-Hibbert 240 111 96 +15 +7 8 <font style="background:yellow; color:black">HOU Lowry-Martin-Battier-Scola-Hayes 497 116 108 +8 +6 6</font> LAL Fisher-Bryant-Artest-Odom-Gasol 657 116 103 +13 +6 5 ATL Bibby-Johnson-Smith-Horford-Collins 156 106 95 +10 +6 10 PHI Holiday-Meeks-Iguodala-Brand-Hawes 261 108 103 +6 +5 8 CHI Rose-Bogans-Deng-Thomas-Boozer 192 111 98 +12 +5 9 SAS Parker-Ginobili-Jefferson-Blair-Duncan 487 111 103 +8 +5 6 PHX Nash-Richardson-Hill-Turkoglu-Frye 158 118 111 +7 +4 10 <font style="background:yellow; color:black">HOU Lowry-Martin-Battier-Scola-Miller 145 111 105 +6 +4 10</font> OKC Westbrook-Sefolosha-Durant-Green-Ibaka 238 115 113 +2 +3 8 NYK Felton-Fields-Chandler-Gallinari-Stoudemire 516 114 109 +5 +3 5 WAS Wall-Young-Lewis-Blatche-McGee 158 111 100 +11 +3 10 CHI Rose-Bogans-Deng-Gibson-Noah 195 108 103 +5 +2 9 DAL Barea-Terry-Marion-Nowitzki-Haywood 228 109 104 +5 +2 8 CLE Williams-Gibson-Parker-Jamison-Varejao 233 101 100 +1 +2 8 GSW Curry-Ellis-Wright-Lee-Biedrins 293 115 106 +9 +2 7 NOH Paul-Belinelli-Ariza-West-Okafor 748 108 105 +3 +1 5 MEM Conley-Mayo-Gay-Randolph-Gasol 318 114 112 +3 +1 7 ORL Nelson-Richardson-Turkoglu-Bass-Howard 178 105 103 +2 - 10 POR Miller-Roy-Batum-Aldridge-Camby 229 114 110 +4 -1 9 CHA Augustin-Jackson-Wallace-Diaw-Mohammed 322 105 106 -1 -2 7 ATL Bibby-Johnson-Williams-Smith-Horford 330 110 105 +6 -2 7 OKC Westbrook-Sefolosha-Durant-Green-Krstic 372 108 110 -2 -2 6 ORL Nelson-Carter-Richardson-Lewis-Howard 153 104 102 +2 -3 10 POR Miller-Matthews-Batum-Aldridge-Camby 323 109 108 +1 -3 7 MIN Ridnour-Johnson-Beasley-Love-Milicic 253 108 113 -5 -5 8 MEM Conley-Henry-Gay-Randolph-Gasol 232 107 108 -1 -6 8 UTA Williams-Bell-Kirilenko-Millsap-Jefferson 686 105 109 -4 -6 5 DEN Billups-Afflalo-Anthony-Williams-Hilario 244 101 104 -3 -6 8 DET Stuckey-Hamilton-Prince-Maxiell-Wallace 173 106 116 -10 -7 10 CLE Williams-Parker-Graham-Hickson-Varejao 140 95 104 -9 -9 10 LAC Bledsoe-Gordon-Aminu-Griffin-Jordan 216 111 114 -4 -10 8 <font style="background:yellow; color:black">HOU Lowry-Martin-Battier-Hill-Scola 181 101 105 -4 -10 9</font> MIL Jennings-Salmons-Mbah a Moute-Gooden-Bogut 132 104 108 -3 -11 11 NJN Harris-Morrow-Outlaw-Humphries-Lopez 213 103 118 -15 -16 9 TOR Jack-Derozan-Kleiza-Evans-Bargnani 140 102 110 -7 -16 10 WAS Wall-Hinrich-Thornton-Blatche-McGee 129 96 110 -14 -25 11

Interesting...so Hill, as a starter, was killing our offense and had no real impact on our defense. Of course, I'm not sure what possessions looked like between the 5-man squads for more accurate comparisons. But that's what I'm seeing. Once we figured out this starting lineup, we really started rolling, didn't we? Since Yao went out, we've been playing .500+ basketball. It kind of makes me feel a bit better about the team. I'm not defending our record. I'm just trying to look on the bright side. Coach has had a heck of a time trying to figure out winning rotations this year. Seems like every year injuries really hold us back. This year has hurt the most because of expectations entering the season and then 5 games in, the entire system had to re-adjust.
The nice thing about basketballvalue.com is you can get expanded info on each unit, like who they faced and what the results were. So for instance, with Hill and the rest of the starters: http://basketballvalue.com/amofunit.php?year=2010-2011&unit=579-77-198-844-674
Something is odd about that list. The team with the best record, SAS, only has one lineup in the list..ranking at #20 Parker-Ginobili-Jefferson-Blair-Duncan Is that list relative to other lineups on the same team?
Thanks durvasa. This link doesn't work, at least not for me. The funny thing is the bench play was supposed to be one of our strengths, so far it has been making the starter's work harder; this is why I was in favor of bringing Lowry off the bench once Brooks got back, for now I don't want that anymore.
That list shows the top 50 most used lineups. The Spurs only have 1 lineup that's played more than 100 minutes this year: http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits.php?year=2010-2011&team=SAS Popovich uses a lot of different lineup combinations. While the Spurs starters have been solid, he doesn't overly rely on them and the reserves have done great when he's mixed them in.
You can't really say that...have you seen those standard errors? There is not statistical significance between the last two highlighted sections. The first and the last is debatable.
Also when you watch the games that Hill has started, the first unit pretty much freezes him out of the ball. But go ahead get your pitchforks and torches out.... DD
I'm a little surprised that our top unit offensively is with Hayes at the 5. I bet that wouldn't be the case in years past. (only referring to when Yao is injured) I think that illustrates how Chucks offensive game has grown. He's no longer a liability on that end of the floor.
It was obviously the team suffered on both ends when Hayes whent down. Hill simply isn't ready to play starting center yet. Defense was just as poor with Miller playing starting center, but the offense doesn't suffer that much. Can't believe Chuck becomes so crucial to this team nowadays. Rockets desparately need someone in the middle.
Look at the Lakers' old starting 5, it's just as good as ours, it should come as no surprise that we took them to 7 games. Then you add a player who isn't as talented as Odom but he is a big interior defender and suddenly they're #2. Defensive big man is all this team needs.
Hill isn't ready to play backup center either. I'll be glad when Miller gets back. The second unit with Miller and Hill playing at the same time was pretty effective earlier in the year.
Interestingly, Hayes produces better offense and worse defense than Miller. I guess the margin of error makes the differences not that significant.
