The agent for Dallas Mavericks center Brendan Haywood told ESPNDallas.com that his client was suspended for Friday's game in San Antonio after a heated discussion during the morning shootaround with coach Rick Carlisle.

Agent Andy Miller said Saturday in a phone interview that the dispute was a "one-time isolated discussion" that had nothing to do with Haywood's diminished role on the team in recent weeks.

Sources with knowledge of the incident confirmed that account Saturday, telling ESPNDallas.com that the Mavericks decided to send Haywood back to Dallas after the shootaround and hold him out of an eventual 103-94 victory over the rival San Antonio Spurs because of what was deemed an over-the-line outburst directed at Carlisle.

One source insisted that the clash -- described by Carlisle as a violation of team rules -- was indeed more "strategic" and focus-related based on what was happening during the shootaround and not about playing time, with Haywood's angry reaction to his coach's criticism leading to the suspension.

"It happened at shootaround and had nothing to do with his role on the team," Miller said. "My understanding is he and Rick always had a very good relationship and [Friday's] misunderstanding doesn't change that."

Haywood was virtually promised the Mavs' starting center spot in July when he re-signed with the Mavericks for six years in a deal that could be worth up to $55 million.

Also with Tyson Chandler doing so well in Dallas, they have no need for Haywood.

Morey should seriously consider going after this guy; we desperately need his size and shotblocking. He also is great on the pick n rolls.

Just the opposite of what the Rockets need to do.

NO NO NO NO NO GOD NO.

We already have 3/4 of the team being overpaid, we don't need another one.

He would do as much good for this team as a bandaid would do on a gunshot wound.

Just cause Tyson Chandler is doing so well, it does not mean that they don't need Haywood anymore. What if Chandler gets hurt again?

I thought the Rockets failed hard when they couldn't make the deal for Haywood last year. I still think so, you don't pass up an opportunity to get one of the best defensive big men in the league, no matter what.

Cuban and Donnie would probably listen to an offer. The Mavs need a good back up pg and/or pf. BTW, the Mavs have two other young centers in Mahimni and Ajinca.

We need him why? I'd rather ride with Hayes, Miller, Hill, Scola and 24 minutes of Yao when he comes back.

We've got Jordan Hill for 1/9th the price tag.. Haywood is a consistent 10ppg, 10rpg, and 2+bpg when playing starter minutes, but Hill is showing glimpses that he can do that just coming off the bench!

I dont have a problem if Hill can put up 8ppg, 6rpg, and 2bpg off the bench

Haywood is a proven NBA vet, but i'll take my chances with the cheaper price tag that wont handicap us in the future..

I wonder if a fan from another team ever made a similar thread about Kelvin Cato. Probably not, but just saying.

Carlisle laments, "Why can't you be more like Erick Dampier?"
