Anytime you have a big man with the skills and ability that Yao has/had, you have to give him every chance to succeed. The contract also made it VERY difficult to move him but even so, just wouldn't have been possible.

    Saying all that...

This is not a controversial topic, it's a dumb topic. First of all, why wouldn't Yao be a Rocket? He was and IS the most dominant big man in the league when healthy!!! End of the story!!

I can't agree more. It is a 'maybe', if yao is not chinese, which all depends on the trade possibilities. But one thing more certain is that he might not be earning as much as he is earning now.

How many 7'-6" centers are out there that can score 20 pts, pull down 10 rebounds a game and hit free throws?

Even if Yao was Bantu he would still be a Rocket.

Hmm hard one, I voted no because I think the Rockets would have opted to rebuild.

If Yao weren't Asian, he would have won at least a championship with his team. The reason is those people, who think NBA is "their thing", secretly hate him so much as a yellow skin outsider and won't tolerate and recognize a bit of his success. It's ugly, but it's true.

The question is poorly worded. You should have asked: "If Yao was not a cash cow would he still be a Rocket?" His race/nationality is a means to an end, to a degree. He could be from Brazil or New Zealand or Mars as long as his presence increased revenue. That's the cynical portion of the answer. Let's not forget his great heart, huge stature and amazing skill set.

Do you remember the 06 -07 Yao averaging 33/15/3 a game? How can we get that guy back?

Bit of an over-exaggeration but that was definitely one of his best seasons.

I think you should just say you don't like Yao and the Rox should get rid of him, and stop beating around the bush with this poll. Yao is a great player and a great person, I hope he stays with the Rox until he retires and becomes a permanent part of the organization, and yes because he is Asian. This will give the Rox a popularity for a long time, and may make them an attractive organization for other players to want to play in Houston. What is wrong with that, and why wouldn't you want that? Yao I also believe, has had a good influance on his teamates. I think C Landry became the player he is because he saw how Yao busted his ass to become the player he is and followed on his footsteps. I think the Rox had that 22 game streak even without him because of his influence. They took the Fakers to seven games after he went down because he refuse to leave that game even after he had been injured. Those are the things you want to build a foundation on. Not some a$$hole player that wants a show to tell people what he is going to do. I hope we can have a championship team with Yao and his character. Unfortunally people always want to see rings and they think that is the sign of success. I respect the Spurs because they built a championship team the right way. They got lucky with Tim Duncan, but Robinson was a great influence on him. Robinson got owened by Olajuwon, and I personally didn't think much of him as a player, but as a person he is a great man that helps the community and a military man. His influence on the Spurs is still there till today. When people talk of the Spurs there is very little negativr to fing if any. The Fakers and the Yanks may have a lot of championships, but everytime I see one of their fans all I see is an A$$HOLE.

If Yao wasn't Asian, the front of the uniforms would read "Houston" instead of "Rockets."

But besides that, he'd still be a Rocket.

As a Chinese, I think Yao will leave or traded if he is not from China.

As a Rocket fans, I think Yao is good enough when he is health. He just came back from bone restructure surgery and only 7 games after 500+ days. Lets show some patience and see what he will be at the end of this season. It is not late to get rid of him after Apr.2011.

Most of Yao haters thought that Yao is not worth of 17M $ this year, but NBA is business. You can not forecast someone will be hurt or someone keep fit.

By the way, no defense not champion. Our defense sucks this season until now. This is not someone's fault, but the whole team.

No question he'd be gone. It's not even the fact that he's Asian, it's the money he brings worldwide and obviously China in particular. If Yao were a regular American college graduate with no more international appeal than the average NBA star, he'd of been gone last year or at the end of this year.

That's what I fear too with Les. He's too blinded by the money. Time will tell to see how long he watches the ship sink with Yao Mizzy.

So what the heck would the Rockets have gotten if they had traded an injured Yao at the end of last season? Absolutely nothing useful.

If Yao does nothing more in his career, he is Rik Smits. Rik Smits does not make max money under any circumstances. Yao is here because of his icon status, which yes revolves around money more than it does around his race, but how can you separate the two if it's his race that makes him such a cash cow? If he's not Chinese he might still be here but not making the kind of change he does now, and certainly not getting the 4+ chances he's gotten to do extensive rehab from serious injuries to come back and lead this team.

I think Yao's a great team player and his work ethic is fantastic. He's a great commodity to the NBA. But let's be honest, he's benefited greatly from being asian. Hes seen as the biggest non threatning man on earth. If he was black the media would ten times worse on him. Just the facts...

Why can't I rate this thread lower than a 1? Seems unfair not to have the option.
