First of all, I think Isiah was only good at drafting when he was a GM. But it seems like players/FAs like and are influenced by former players/stars. They can relate to the players well and have useful connections.

Morey is a genius, no doubt. But I think it would help add someone who can bring these types of things to the table, in an assistant role. Guys like Riley, Thomas, etc. are assets. And they don't count against the cap!

I think the genius of Morey combined with a person like this would go a long way in helping us reel in top-notch talent. I think we do a great job acquiring talent via trading and drafting but need to improve our Free Agency game.

    Thoughts?

For example, a lot of people on this board want Chris Paul. Someone like Isiah would relate to him so well. I am not saying hire someone like him and fire Morey. What I'm saying is, having that type of influence + Morey's brilliance = more FA success.

Rick Adelman? Our head coach is a former player.

true to some extent. But nowadays we want more than Brad Miller. For the most part we either have (Martin), had (Ron), or don't want the guys he's coached in past (Bibby).

When I think of former NBAers with influence, I think of Russell, Magic, maybe even Doc. These guys would be able to relate to / command respect of players just because of their contributions to the game. I feel we are missing that.

I don't know what to say. Hakeem is the unofficial spokesman for the Rockets. He tried to recruit Bosh. I hate to take any other FA available. Personally, I enjoy homegrown talent more. I would love the Rockets even more if we were in OKC's position.

I dont think players go anywhere based on what a former player does in the recruiting process. First of all big time players almost never move in free agency. This is the first time since Shaq a star player switched via free agency.

Second, money more then anything else dictates where people go. Everyone talks about Bosh and Lebron leaving money on the table. That is total BS. With the sign and trades, they still got their 6 year deals. With not having to pay state tax on that much money over 6 years, the total amount paid to these guys is going to be almost the same compared to what they would have made had they stayed with their team. Both know they get about the same amount of cash and get to live in Miami and play with Wade as opposed to staying where they were.

Amare didnt leave money on the table. Phoenix would not pay him the max, so he bolted to NY. Im sure Rudy Gay would rather be somewhere other then Memphis, but they gave him the max and he jumped on it. It is always about money when the player is in his prime. Different story at the end of careers but those guys arent true stud free agents.

Third, there are big time former players in executive positions. Bird, Ainge, Dumars for example. None of those guys are overly successful in convincing FA to join their teams. No one is jumping to the Pacers cuz Bird is one of the greatest of all time. I dont see people flocking to Charlotte because MJ is there. And even when Isiah was in NY the first time no one was lining up to show up, so why would they do that now if he came to Houston. Obama couldnt get Lebron to go to the Bulls. I dont think hiring the worst executive in NBA history is going to make anyone jump to the Rox.

If we want Melo or CP3 there is only two options. First do what we did with Bosh. Make sure you have enough assets to work a trade to pay these guys the max and then hope they want to go to Hou. Second, gut the team, be terrible for a year and free up enough space to try to chase them outright and then work the sign and trade afterwards.

Isiah Thomas has done a horrible job in free agency.
Joe Dumars has done a bad job in free agency.
Elgin Baylor has done a bad job in free agency.

Yeah, I don't think he cares too much for Rick since he didn't play him.

Hakeem, unfortunately, get the respect, I feel, that the American-born legends get. But maybe having Hakeem officially apart of the organization would help us in FA.

Sikma was a pretty good player. But I don't think he has that type of appeal to players.

I vote for Vernon Maxwell. He can relate to a lot of NBA players who keep knocking women up all over the country. Lead by experience, don't make my mistakes.

Seriously, I love Vernon and he definitely needs a job. It's the least Les can do to a former Rocket who got the boot because Les traded for Clyde.

Isiah Thomas?? We surely don't need anyone like him in the Rockets organization. You have got to be kidding!

I said Isiah was only good at 1 thing when he was GM, drafting. Meaning he wasn't a good GM and that i'm not suggesting him. I'm starting that a former player/legend figure, in general, would help us in our pursuits of FAs. You see the difference?

Isiah Thomas is widely regarded as a manipulative little b*stard. I'd rather we keep him away from the organization.

Morey hasn't exactly done poorly in the draft. And it's not like Thomas was able to bring LeBron to the Knicks.

Larry Bird and Joe Dumars are hall of famers also. Who have then gotten in free agency in the last few years?

    Dumar's free agent acquisitions.
    Charlie Villanueva
    over-the-hill Ben Wallace
    Ben Gordon
    Chris Wilcox

Who are these premium free agents that the Pacers gotten since Bird has been president of operations since 2003? I don't even know.
