This is a spin off from Ronny's thread about minority professional associations. While I think few people are overtly racist but I think there is a natural inclination among many people to want hang out with people of their own racial and ethnic background for cultural reasons and often languange reasons. For me personally I have noticed that I mostly hang out with Non-Asians and Chinese. I think part of this is that I grew up around very few other Asians and at the same time there are few Asians that live near me, or that I deal with professionally. There are times though that I want to around more Asians and am involved in a few Asian cultural organizations.

Just curious how others out there feel about hanging out with their own race. Is it something your prefer, something you don't or is it something you don't think about?

im white but my "best" friends through my life have been scattered out among all races, including my girlfriends. last girlfriend was thai/laos, current girlfriend is in your face mexican chick.

my extended group of friends have always been mostly open minded people. i get along with most everybody but the people that are close minded ex:homophobic just dont do it for me too much.

so people that dont look down on other people and have for example an open mind about music can apply to be peleincubus' friend. thanks

Thats how its always been. There's subtle nuances within your own ethnic demographic that makes it more comfortable to be around.

Also the culture you grew up in compared to other cultures has an effect. Do any of us in the US tech generation with our gadgets and bad TV and taste in music, no matter what color we are, would we really want to hang out with people in the streets in Afghanistan? Seriously. It might be a great cultural learning experience. It might be the best feeling of brotherhood. But would you want to go to the mall with them or relocate there?

Immigrants from Mexico fresh across the border. Great people they are - would you want to adopt them, or you move THERE where they left?

That doesnt make you racist, bigoted, prejudiced. As long as you have tolerance and respect for those outside your own is what counts. As long as you dont impose your belief system on others and arent always fearful of your neighbor.

The only way to remove that is if people around the world decide to have an ongoing "swirlfest" and intentionally try to mix together and eradicate race and ethnicities altogether 1 generation at a time. But why cant we just accept people for what they are already?

I think most people do, not really due to race, but manerisms and culture/language.

Different race for sure. Most Persian guys (not all) have this obsession of showing off and picking up girls when their friends are around. They have big egos and awful attitudes. Some are actually pretty nice and down to earth but like I said most of them are big jerks.

I think the answer to your question lies in the fear that there could be a large shift in the culture of specific areas.
Take your examples... If a huge number of Afghan people were able to populate a smaller portion of the US, the modern US citizen would likely not feel comfortable with it, at least to the point of living among them, since the cultures wouldn't mesh. It's easier if immigrants come in smaller numbers, and integrate to a certain extent.

For me it's not as much about race and ethnicity as it is class and education. My days are full of rich and interesting epicureans. Whenever I want to see what the little people are doing, I come to this site.

I'm mixed (black/white{Italian}) and for the most part have kept a pretty diverse group of friends and acquaintences. The only people as a group I tend to be wary of is white males and for reasons particular to my circumstance.

Yes. Nothing racist about it -- I have no issues making friends with people of any race or color and actually do have a fairly diverse spectrum of friends I've made over the years. It's just a purely cultural thing -- when you grow up on another continent, you're just more at home with people who are from the same place as you -- they appreciate the same type of music, they understand your inside jokes, they hold the same values that you do. Same reason why I personally wouldn't do an inter-racial marriage, even though I have absolutely nothing against the idea.

Leaving aside the tongue in cheek note at the end of this post it does raise an interesting question.

What is more important in regard to who you associate with, race / ethnicity or class?

Definitely class and then race/ethnicity, which is sometimes reflective of education but not necessarily. Coming on this board, it's hard to ignore that they're many posters from different socio-economic levels which is evident in their comments and attitudes towards certain things like religion, politics, taste in music, etc.

On race/ethnicity, I'd like to add that it sometimes feel stifling associating with one group of people only so I like to change it up a bit every now and then.

Since the only other major race is white, then Caucasians must do it too right?
