This isn't meant to be a bashing thread on Ariza or anything but let's face it the guy could improve in a few areas. What's everyone's opinion on where Ariza could use the most help in his game?
Defense. I hope his role as a creator is soon ending. We need him as a defender and a shooter, like what the media made him out to be in the lakers champ run
this pretty much boils down to decision making. He dribbles the ball into the corner, picks up his dribble, and then is stuck on the wing because he doesn't know what he wants to do. This happens countless times during a game and you think he would learn by now.
I noticed he ALWAYS picks up his dribble (awkwardly) once he gets about 5 feet within the 3 pt line. Ticks me off.
Defense. I'll freely admit, if Ariza becomes a second Batman on defense I won't really care too much what he does on offense. But he needs to gamble less on the steals and work harder on it.
Lol, that would be too easy. This is more of a question of what would help his overall game the most.
Shot selection This year he may handle the ball more than he might normally, but going forward(say next year and the years going forward), is he going to handle the ball a lot? I'd tend to say no as we will have some other pieces around him so he doesnt have to do so much. He'll [hopefully] then let things come to him instead of him going to things he isnt accustomed to or isnt really good at.
I would say dribbling first bc that could lead to better shots. His inability to create his own shots leeds to his bad shot selection.
I voted shot selection, though he generally seems to shoot when he is open. It is really not shot selection as much as shot accuracy.
His three point shooting. Once Yao comes back, and we have that elite 2 guard (Tracy/Wade/other FA), he'll be doing a lot of spotting up as a priority role player. Basically, he'll move back to his LA role.
I vote for finishing strong. He's got length and quickness, but he's isn't coordinated or strong in the air, at all. And being an erratic shooter and a poor ball-handler ... well, its just a fact that he's a mediocre offensive talent. His best offensive skill, interestingly enough, is what he does on defense -- forcing turnovers that lead to transition opportunities.
