this is good. he needs to lose weight to take some of the stress off of his foot anyway.

Why? Motumbo was slower than Yao and he could handle that. Hayes isn't running the breaks yet he has good +/- stats.

No matter how much weight Yao lost, he can't run up and down quickly anyway. Just learn how to throw outlet passes better and let other guys run fast. Everything would be fine. His offensive job is in half court.

Seems Yao likes Lowry a lot.

Have you ever seen Motumbo ran fast breaks? He looks quicker to get the rebounds because his arms are so long and other players are also afraid of his elbow.

Yao at least ran a little bit, beating guys like Kaman occasionally, for example. An his best play was behind back dribble for a fast break.

Hmm which Mutombo are you talking about? The Deke 2 years ago or the Deke 10 years ago? Personally, i don't think Yao's speed changed since he got in the NBA. Perhaps 3-4 years ago he was the fastest but not a big difference anyways. For Deke, if your talking about the Deke 2 years ago, he might be a little bit slower than Yao at running . Don't forget that Deke was DPOY ;)

Of course I'm talking about the 40 year or maybe 50 year old Deke. Young
Mutombo with on leg maybe ran faster than Yao.

Run and gun does not win championships.

Yao should try improving his range (and lose weight obviously), that way he can take his time, catch up with the rest of the team and get an open jumpshot.

    this is ridiculous
lets say yao trains hard and trims down to his rookie weight
he is still by far the slowest center in the league
i mean, yao went down like a tree when marbury crossed him over

what yao needs to do is study films
    study them hard
he needs to play smarter if he wants to come back and contribute

Adelman will probably try to refine what he attempted to do last season with Yao. The other four players push the ball upcourt for a quick score while Yao trails behind. If there's no quick scoring opportunity, set Yao up in the post for a more methodical attack.

Admittedly, this strategy had a lot of problems last season, but with the experience of playing at a faster pace this season may make it run better next year.

As another poster said already, the key for Yao will not be keeping up with a run-and-gun offense, but making good, consistent outlet passes to start fast breaks. Something Chuck Hayes has been doing very well for us.

Damn reading that article is painful...

Losing weight will probably be better for Yao in terms of his future, but he'll definetly have a harder time dominating in the post.

I don't think that is true, Yao has never been a power player like Dwight who will be useless when his athleticism fades.

He's a center. If any other big man was guarding marbury, they would've fell or got crossed over just as badly. Yao's problem was that he should've let Marbury pass him and try to block him from behind or just stood there with his arms up and force him to shoot over him or try to go around him. He was trying to play like a guard in a center's body.
