You know what, I am Mexican and I still visit San Jacinto, even though that's a reminder that we lost all our #@*(#&$^( LAND. Damn you, Santa Anna. Damn you to heck.

Hey, I enjoy visiting national parks, etc., and I was just in Washington DC and was in awe when I saw how majestic Honest Abe looked sitting there... just looking at me... I could hear him whispering... "LOOK AT ME... LOOK! Don't I rock? Aren't I randy?" :D Yeah, I saw a bunch of foreigners.

Is that any different? Are National Monuments different than parks? Most white folks can afford Winnebagos and coach vans, and most minorities don't want to deal with that stuff.

Why are you excluding Latino and Asian minorities, though? You mean you saw us there?

You forgot the link, but don't worry, I instantly recognized the style of the work and who wrote it: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2009/08/14/128-camping/ ;)

This isn't the first time he's done this.

He's repeatedly been told to stop plagiarizing from that site, yet he continues to post excerpts from that site without providing links or even acknowledging it.

I'm Hispanic. I don't think my folks have ever taken me camping. It's a culture thing. The Ideal vacation is different to many people. We've never been to Disney World either.

^ Now that you mention it, we've been camping to Lake Livingston, Brazos Bend State Park, San Jacinto, and other places only in Texas. I am getting sort of confused with which minorities she's pointing out, but I don't think she's saying Hispanics are in those she says don't visit national parks.

Another question would be: Why don't African/Arabic/Indian - Americans go camping?

I am Indian and I would be interested in visiting a national park and the grand canyon, and I really hope to someday. Pay for my plane ticket and hotel and I'm in :)

In all seriousness, I recently viewed a show on the Discovery Channel about Yellowstone National Park. There was some amazing footage of the landscape and the various creatures roaming around the park. The discussed how rough the conditions can get, and what effects the volcano has on the climate, along with how all the animals deal with the conditions. Fascinating stuff if you ask me. Amazing how any creature could survive an entire year of the diverse mess Yellowstone has to offer.

The last time I went car camping it was a friend of mine's extended family at a state park. This was only car camping but there was a large black family camping there too.

If it's the 'camping' that's keeping some of you away from the national parks -- you should know there's an amazing variety of accomodation in the parks. From super-lux cabins and old historic lodges to basic huts -- or your basic tent.

And there are outfitting companies that will arange mind-blowing kayak, biking, or hiking trips that will pamper you if that's your thing and your pocketbook allows.

I'm not big on parking-lot camping -- but the National Park System -- Amazing!

Me either. When growing up, we couldn't afford the whole Astroworld/Disneyworld thing. I still don't find any need to go to places like that, but I do find myself fascinated by visiting naturally beautiful sites or traveling through them via a train or something. Mostly just for picture taking. I would like to take pics of woods/trees from a distance, but not necessarily camp out there. :D

What I find more interesting is visiting small towns (less than 10-15,000 people or so), hitting up mom & pop restaurants, and chatting with the residents. Learning about the history of the town, how it got formed, old pics of the area, etc.

I was thinking of going to a few state parks in Texas and check out some historical areas. Most of these places were in hick towns, rural areas, etc.

What minorities do sometimes have to think about in the back of their minds is the racial enviroment of a rural area. Meaning will they be harrassed, will they not be welcomed in these small towns, etc. Something that white people never have to consider. So why even subject yourself the possibility of that?

I'm Pakistani, and although I've been on tons of vacations with the fam over the years, we have yet to go to a national park, camping, or fishing.

That's not to say we don't appreciate the outdoors, because we do (been to Colorado, Vancouver, Whistler, Portland). I guess we just want the wilderness to be somewhat close to a large city.

It's a cultural thing. Some people dig the urban thing, some people like the nature thing. I could care less about camping, but I'll take a national park(stay in a nice place around or on the park) over the city any day of the week.

When I was younger I always loved going on vacation from Houston to other big cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, SF, etc.).

But now that I live in Chicago, I have no desire to visit NYC, LA, SF, etc. (okay, maybe LA and SF in the winter). Not to say that Chicago is or isn't better than those cities, but when I go on vacation now, I'd much rather travel internationally, or if in the US...somewhere non-urban.

I think you need to open your eyes. In the past few years I've also been all over the country visiting national parks and scenic/touristy places and the one thing my wife and I realized is that we cannot escape those darn FOBs (self-hating disclaimer: we're both of south asian descent).

It's become a running joke, that as soon as we arrive at our destination, not a minute goes by before we either get whiff of coconut oil-infused hair, masala-laden tiffins, or some curse word-enhanced sentence in hindi/urdu/bengali. Interestingly enough, they too are concerned with finding gora places of interest.

I've shared this experience with other brown people who travel a lot, and they've echoed our sentiments. Keep travelling, you'll meet some soon enough. Just don't say we didn't warn you.
