No, it's a political stunt. He did a similar thing when talking to a group of Russian students. He brought up how important Alex Ovechkin is to the D.C. area even after previously admitting he doesn't watch much hockey. Obama watches basketball but I wouldn't be surprised if he's barely ever seen Yao play and has no interest in the Rockets. I'm guessing he's made comments like this about other sports figures, too. If he ever speaks about Argentina, his speechwriter will probably include something about the influence Manu Ginobili has had in SA.
Didn't Obama say during the Lakers series that the Rockets were a great example to follow or something like that?
