Out of the past 30+ years at least 90% are/were big time contributors in the NBA...I am confused about your observation....

    what do you mean?

I had to go back to 1972 and Larue Martin to find a guy I hadn't heard of

    Son, don't you get cable?

Damn, you havent heard of most of those??

I only keep track of what happens with the Rockets almost exclusively over the last 25 yrs or soand I have heard of all but 3 of those guys going down to about 1967.

Ive got to guess you are a new basketball fan...

You could put together a great team from that list. There were some who didn't play up to expectations but that is the risk you take, and one I think worth taking.

I didn't remember Joe Barrry Carroll being the #1 pick, but the years fade my memories.

And I was confusing that Mychal Thompson guy for the dude at LA. As I look further down, how would you like to face today's rude fans with a last name of Ricketts! LOL

Aight. Maybe I exaggerated. But go back and look up draft's and see the entire class. Except for the slam dunks - Duncan, Olajuwon, Shaq... there's an awful lot of talented players yes... but they are still picks that make you cringe. And look back to the picks during the NBA's early days.... A surprising number of them are little known.

Wilt was a "territorial choice." My understanding is that the team of the player's hometown (or some defined territory) could reserve a player, then take him with whatever #1 they have when he decides to come out.

Wilt was the 3rd pick in 1959 behind Art Boozer and Bailey Howell.

Wow, the Jazz announcer was #1 in '57!

Is it just me? It appears that #1 Centers have a good track record. 20 years from '81 to '01:

Dream, Ewing, Robinson, O'Neal & Daugherty

    vs

    Sampson, Joe Smith, Kandiman

And I wouldn't necessarily call Ralph a total bust.
