So, I was recently with a friend, and we were stopped at a signal.

I then proceeded to say, the signal light is "open", this then led to an argument about whether it's open or on.

I said open, because I view the signal light like a gate, when it's green the gate is open, when it's red, the gate is closed.

Never heard either term being used. Always thought it was just green, yellow, or red.

I thought it was traffic light?

In any case, any light turns on. Usually filipinos say "the light is open"

my sisters would always say "open the light" in a room. i'd always correct them. it's "turn on the light".

but with signal lights...um, "it's green, go".

Are you from the UK or something? Everyone I have ever known has just said "green", "yellow", or "red".
