I will commend the city of Seattle and Clay Bennett for letting the Supersonics name go back to Seattle. There is no way a team name should maintain even when the team relocates. LA LAKERS? Utah JAZZ??? New Orleans HORNETS??? Utah should have changed their name when they moved, that way New Orleans could have re-taken the Jazz name. Dammit Utah.
Our case is different...San Diego made the move to Houston too easy by naming the team the "Rockets".
yeah the thing is the Rockets name probably fits Houston better than San Diego. Houston is famous for NASA whereas san diego no one really cares where the rockets are launched.
San Diego is home to the U.S. Marines and the U.S. Navy... its a very heavy military city > Rockets...
NASA > U.S. Military in terms of Rockets. As far as the name, it's stupid. Even the OKC Chiefs, Cherokees, Twisters, and Barrons are better.
Yeah, but you said... Which would imply even cases like ours, in which the name is actually more suitable now than before.
i guess you could say, by virtue of oklahoma sucking so much, texas won't ever fall into the gulf of mexico. ba-dump-psh!
With both team probably sucking for the foreseeable future... Charlotte and OKC should join forces and name themselves the "Thundercats" how frickin awesome would that be?!?! ..cept they would still suck.
That's a great idea. Adding Durant,Green and Westbrook to the Bobcats will at least make it tolerable to watch both of the teams.
A question: What happen to all the records the franchise holds when it relocates and changes its name, and the old name goes back to a new team in the original city? Which team gets the continuity?
At first I thought this sounded so minor league. But then I realized that, from my perception, that's not the fault of the nickname but the city name. Seriously, you could call them anything after saying Oklahoma City and the first thought that would cross my mind is: "minor league." I'm sure that will change though.
This nickname sounds so blah. It really sucks. Thankfully for the Thunder, they play in a league with many bad nicknames. So the while the Oklahoma City Thunder is a crappy name, it's not as bad as the Washington Wizards, Orlando Magic, Memphis Grizzlies (Vancouver Grizzlies worked), or Utah Jazz. It really sounds focus-group tested. Like they wanted to name it the Oklahoma City Thunderbirds, and backed off of it. I do think it could work well with commercial partners, though. "You're listening to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Cumulus Radio."
