If we aren't talking superstars like Hakeem, Clyde and such... I think we would benefit from a player like Cassell or Jim Peterson.

I am focusing on those still in the NBA, so Cassell #1, Mobley #2, James #3, Posey #4 and Francis #5. Though the last spot between Francis and Lue is close. All 6 would add another 3 ball shooter while the 1st four also bring numberous other good attributes (Posey, Cat and James--defense and finishing, Cassell the clutchness and leadership).

I don't buy Horry or Nachbar helping much.

To limit the insanity of counterfactuals, I'll confine my options to "as is." So no Olajuwon, Drexler, etc.

Also, I'll follow the technical definition of ex-Rockets, which includes anybody who was ours to trade.

And I'll interpret help in the long-term sense.

    So, Rudy Gay.

If it could just be any former Rocket I'd definitely say Hakeem and just have him start at PF for most of his minutes unless Yao was resting on the bench. Of course, that pick is too obvious and I'm gonna assume like everyone else that the topic creator pretty much didn't mean guys like Drexler and Hakeem.

I'll assume we're talking about current players who were former Rockets. If that's the case I would, no question, pick Sam Cassell. Sam still has a couple good years left in him and on our very talented team could be the missing piece to a title. At PG he would bring us not only great ballhandling and passing, but also pretty nice defense and a solid 3rd scoring option. Not to mention the fact that Skip would make a great backup in 10-15 minutes a night. I think Cassell is exactly the kind of player we need to fill what is the most glaring hole on our team.

If not Cassell... I think I'd want Steve Franchise to be our starter at PG. I think with Skip backing him up and our talented team he could have a nice impact.

old-school Mario would be perfect for our needs at the 2 that Bonzi isn't taking care of. Bulldog D, so JVG would love and play him and a good outside shot.

Elton Brand. ok, so maybe he's a degree or two of separation removed from the rocks (he's a fellow Dukie with Battier) but oh, what a player to complement low-post Yao.

How about John Lucas, pre-nose candy, at lead guard, or Lew Lloyd?

Id welcome back Stevie in a heartbeat, after some hard knocks, I think now he could be the PG that could take us to the promised land! Ive always wanted Cato back, with a reasonable contract at PF. Mobley or Cassell are obvious great pickups. And for an 'under the radar pick,' id like to get Lampe back and actually utilize him. For 'old school' (ie no longer playin) Mad Max. The Jet or The Junkyard Dog. And why isnt Dream an assistant coach tudoring Yao?!?!? We hired Ewing to coach Yao, why not the guy who actually PLAYED for our team AND schooled Ewing?
