There way of life is so opposite of ours, they treat women like subhuman and kill people in public for speaking their minds.

That is diabolically opposed to EVERYTHING the United States stands for. In the same sense, our life liberty and freedoms seem to be opposed to the lifestyle their leaders want for their citizens.

We as a nation could turn a cheek to them, but I am afraid we will always be thought of as a threat to “their” way of life. People flee their countries to get away, while they flock to live in the U.S.

As long as these type of people are in power, I am afraid we will always be fighting.

Well.. if the U.S. invades and installs an "American friendly" government, I'm sure the two countries will get along just fine.

I wonder how much parallel there is to the anti-American sentiment that the Japanese held in the 30's and 40's to what the Islamic extremist leaders think of the US today.

WWII and Japan turned out well, since the end of the War you don’t have much anti-US sentiment and we get along with Japan well now. War achieved peace in that instance.

Will it take destroying Afghan and then building them back up to achieve peace now?

Is the question "can we ever get along with Afghanistan?" or is it "can we ever get along with a extremist faction of a religion such as the Taliban?". In other words, what if the Afghanis were ruled by "true Islam"? It's not a question of the common citizenry necessarily getting along with us, but more of the ruling people getting along with us.

How about if we clone Bin Laden and then just freak the crap out of everyone. Sometimes the simplest plan is the best.

The saddest part is that 90% of Afganistan does not believe in the Taliban, but the have the weapons and technology to rule.

But in regards to whether the US can ever get along with the Taliban is a redundant question, because the US giving weapons and training the most fanatic people in that country because they made the best soldiers allowed the Taliban to take power by force. So they got along great for years while the Afghanis were fighting against the Soviets.

Now 90% of Afghanistan is paying the price for what the US gave the power to....

Of course we can get along quite well with the Afghanis even if they make no changes. They will, however, have to discover oil or something of great commercial use to us, however since we no longer need to use them to harass the Russians..

You said: There way of life is so opposite of ours, they treat women like subhuman and kill people in public for speaking their minds.

This pretty much applies to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and we consider them great allies of ours.

It dfinitely applied to Sadam's Iraq during the period leading up to the Gulf War, when he was our great ally against first the Russians and then the Iranians.

Ty-coon, I failed to read your second post. My first one addressed how we frequently have "friendly" relations with dictatorial regimes around the world, if useful.

With regard to genuine relationships with Afghanistan, Our post war treatment of the Japanese and the Germans (with great bebt to Shanna who has pushed that key info on this board) we can make great strides in having authentic mutually beneficial realtions with any number of cultures, especially if we help to bring them up close enough to our economic level of development.
