He was batting 5th and was expected to give us power and drive in closer to 100 runs rather than 80.

He's lost bat speed, period. The fact that half of his home runs went opposite field, when traditionally he's a straight pull-hitter, tells me he's not reaching the ball quick enough and as a result, can't drive it out of the park anymore.

On a team struggling for offense, you have to expect more from your 5th hitter, who should be a real power threat, instead of a guy who hits singles all day. If you're going to do that, you better put up a Joe Mauer-esque batting average and not strike out so much.

the guy is second on the team in rbi, more than your 4th hitter. send him down.

edit: I don't think either should be sent down, I just get tired of the usual shills for management defending everything this team does. there is no argument for sending a guy who makes $4MM and is second on your team in rbi from the fifth spot down to the minors. other than to say you did something.

They had to move somebody, they wanted it to be Lane but that wasn't an option. PW was gone after this season anyway, and they chose to keep a guy (Lane) who was still going to be under club control. They would have, in effect, been giving up 2 players for nothing. PW's skillset isn't well-suited to be an option off the bench either. He's a class guy and a great teammate by all accounts, and acquited himself well during his time in Houston. But it's a business, and them's the breaks.

They did not choose Lane, he did not clear waivers.

wait, wait, wait - the team doesn't have another day off until august 28th - a stretch of 20 games in 20 days. they needed to create a roster spot for a 5th starter. it's not like they did this to shake-up the team.

they tried to send lane down first; a team claimed him. in the long run, they felt better letting wilson go for nothing than lane, and that's a very defensible position considering lane is younger and cheaper and equally (un)productive.

the only other option would have been to let palmiero go, but he's a trusted, LH stick off the bench who makes contact. again, in that situation, palmiero was deemed more valuable than wilson.

in truth, this is like debating the 53rd man on the texans' roster, or the 12th man on the rockets' roster. iow, worthless.

Yes, they could have just as easily DFA'd him as PW, but chose to keep the guy they have under club control beyond this season.

and that's fine, but some in here argue like preston had no value to the team. its not a derek anderson and the rockets situation, its more like stromile swift. a bit of a dissappointment but some of that is probably due to expectations.

Mis-spoke: they could have just as easily sent him through waivers again, and collected a cool 50K when he got claimed. End result is the same.

What if said $4MM guy was not going to get anymore playing time and the 5th spot was a potential future star who could help this year's team make the playoffs?

I would say the astros are taking a big risk if they want to make the playoffs this year. but it could work.

You think Wilson would have played ahead of Scott?

I'm just shocked that another team would want Lane. I bet it was the Cardinals, with Pujols as the mastermind. That dude is always screwing us.
