Why can't we defend the 3's?

What the heck. The last two games we have been lit up from behind the arc. What's up with that? I thought Wesley was a decent defender. Many have said they like Head's defense. TMac can definitely play defense. Moochie is actually decent on defense.

So why the heck can we NOT defend the 3 ball? And don't give me the "good shooters" from the past two games crap, because we gave so many open looks, it's just sad.

    Speed of perimeter players

Luther Head is the only one in the backcourt that has speed but he's still not that great defensively. He'll learn it though

I think it's actually part of JVG's strategy. Force the team to beat you with jumpers and don't give anything up easy inside.

    I don't know.

The jury is still out on whether it's a good strategy or not.

But I guarantee people would be a lot more upset if we were giving up 10-15 layups a game.

Better than giving up layup after layup off the pick & roll...

I think JVG's defense is setup to stop penetration to the basket, not really to stop the threes. The defender keeps rotating away from the outside shooters and then come flying by them as they launch a three.

JVGs defense is oriented to stopping penetration so we will be susceptible to the bigs like LaFrentz and Miller that are capable of shooting the three, torching us when they are hot. We also don't have the personnel save T-Mac to stop the guards and swing men of other teams from knocking down the three, we need athletic, tall man on man defenders to blanket the shooters, right now the shooters get too much room too many times during the game.

Well, we have been playing with teams thats usually shoot a lot of three, and they have a lot of set-plays to get their perimeter shooters open. They're bound to get a lot of open shots. I agree though, after playing GS, JVG should've been able to adjust already.

    1. Last time a checked, layups have a MUCH higher shooting percentage than 3pointers. ;)

    2. Layups result in Yao getting into foul trouble. Double whammy.

    3. If our bigs foul then it's a 3-pointer anyway. Triple whammy.

So I'll take my chances allowing 3-pointers as opposed to somebody driving the lane. Notice, we got torched from 3point land but Yao had huge games and we won. If Yao plays 25 minutes w/ foul trouble, we lose those games.

It has always been JVG's strategy to pack it in to the lane and make them beat you over the top.

There are going to be games where the other team just makes their 3pt shots and we lose....

It is a pick your poisen style of defense.....and the team has chosen to force the other team into shooting 3s.

Help defense, too much. The guys don't understand JVG's help defense system.

Dribble penetration is what kills us. This whole idea of having Yao run out to bump the PG, then try to recover, just really isn't suited to Yao. Either he doesn't get back to his man down low in time to stop the entry pass, or the PG chases him to the bucket-- and gets an and-one and more foul trouble for Yao. I mean, JVG should have given this up already. It might have worked with the Knicks, but it's killing us.

    Agreed.

    Layup % >> 3pt %

I agree, but I like it.. If he can keep getting us 50+ wins a season while he is here I like or chances in the playoffs.. I feel like pulling my hair out some times when I watch his offence, but his D gets us the Ws and wins are the only thing that matters to me..

Agreed. See the Sacramento Kings record after their best low-post threat, Chris Webber, was traded.

it's pretty obvoius that the last two games we've played were against great 3pt shooting teams. on top of that we have no perimeter defense. the reason for that is our guards. head is quick but isn't a great defender, wesley is a good defender but isn't too quick anymore.

the opposing guards allways light us up. until we get a defensive stopper on the perimeter we will have to get used to it.

I think Seattle and Golden State chuck more threes than any other team in the league.

Still, our 3-point defense is not nearly as good as our interior defense.
