Tony Gonzalez scored 21 points, grabbed 12 boards, and had 2 steals in only 33 minutes of play for his summer league team, the Young Guns, which includes Baron Davis. Is this the same Tony Gonzales that plays tight end for the KC Chiefs? I've heard that he is interested in playing in the NBA, with his college days playing basketball for CAL. Could he make the jump to the NBA in the future? It looks like he has got some talent. A couple of other NFL players have said to have NBA caliber skills, mainly Randy Moss and Terrell Owens. Could we see any of them in the future?

Anyways, Baron Davis lit it up for 34 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists against the NBA Pros. Bo Outlaw took advantage of the weak competition with 25 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and a block. Penny Hardaway, trying to make it back from knee surgery, had a good game with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 13 assists, and 3 steals.

Yes, that's the same one. I was looking at his numbers yesterday and was impressed, but he was a hell of a basketball player and he's built like a well... tight end, so he's go the body for it, too.

DoD, what position do you think he will play? His body type is for a power forward, but he's a little too short for PF. Do you think he will play small forward?

Inside the Huddle: NBA dreams for Gonzalez

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    By John Clayton
    ESPN.com

Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez begins his annual July fling in the NBA summer league in Southern California, but this year he's even more serious about his second sport. Before he reports to Chiefs training camp, Gonzalez has scheduled workouts for NBA teams in Boston and Salt Lake City. If an NBA team likes what it sees, Gonzalez is willing to play power forward as soon as the Chiefs season is over, just like he did when he was a two-sport player at Cal.

I went to Cal and was a big fan of Tony Gonzales. He's definitely a PF (not quick enough or enough of a perimeter game to play SF in the NBA). But he's probably too small to play PF in the NBA. Summer league and the NCAAs are one thing, but going up against Karl Malone and Chris Webber -- even if you are built "like" a tight end -- is another.

I think the world of Tony Gonzales (you think Bo Outlaw works hard? Watch Tony on the hardwood.), but I'm not convinced he's an NBA player.

Tony would do well in the NBA.

The "tight end" is always the most popular player on any team, if ya know what I mean.

I too think he'd be undersized, but damn, the guy IS a freakin NFL Pro Bowler, sooo, it would make sense if the guy can hold his ground against Malone and co., which I think that alone would be a tremendous task.

Is it any wonder he's trying out for the NBA?

He probably hears that joke 2-3 times a week.

    Wrath of Khan:

I went to Cal too and played w/ Tony a few times at the RSF....he was very average even on that court (the "A" court downstairs) so I really doubt he could ever make it to the Bigs...but do you remember Tremaine? I thought for sure he would end up w/ an NBA team...

Sure, I remember Tremaine. I think he was too much of a "tweener" to catch on in the NBA. A great rebounder, but too small at 6'7" to play PF in the NBA. Not enough of a perimeter game to play SF.

I just hope that Sean Lampley doesn't suffer the same fate.

He's been awful in summer league play. I doubt he makes the league...at least not right now.

    Tony has no NBA future.

He was a good college player, that's it.
