    What we're covering here
    • Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is in life-threatening condition in a hospital Wednesday after being shot multiple times in an assassination attempt.
    • The shooting took place after an off-site government meeting in the central Slovak town of Handlova. No one else was injured in the attack, according to Slovak Labor Minister Erik Tomáš.
    • Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said the suspected gunman was detained by the police. She said law enforcement agencies will release more information when able.
    • Fico, who is an ally of Russia, won a third termas Slovakian prime minister last October after running a campaign that criticized Western support for Ukraine.

Saw this earlier. Haven't seen if there is a motive behind it. For those who don't follow Euro politics Fico is Right leaning and has greatly criticized European support of Ukraine. He's an ally and with similar views as Hungarian PM VIktor Orban.

Hopefully not a nationalist who wants independence leading to a cascade of events resulting in tens of millions of soldiers dead.

I visited Bratislava for a short weekend. The main attraction was a castle that was converted into a museum. Not really a family oriented destination.

Former eastern bloc nations have to deal with generations of Soviet oppression and the police state where some of the EU members didn't truly enjoy Western Freedom up until this millennium. Sure, the Wall fell in the 80s but many local despots held as much control as they could. Our knowledge of how they lived is mostly encapsulated in a book Orwell wrote in the late 40s...

Imagine being in the same age cohorts where one had to deal with a constant state of fear over your speech and actions, where one whisper from a brother, daughter or uncle could lead to incarceration or death.

The people are still not over it. They're Free ish but speaking your mind or opening up to strangers is gonna take more generations to return, if ever.

Like Hungary, they also have a proud history and identity that they are not willingly going to give up. They could live without the EUs "woke" agenda as the asks for cultural diversity or Dilution is as culturally jarring as the opposite spectrum of being under a totalitarian Russian hegemon.

It's these lessons from others that should make us more vigilant against communist or totalitarian trappings our leaders surface from time to time. Freedom is not an inmate byproduct of governments. It's culturally driven and learned over time and effort (as with anything that requires trust)much like how we couldn't export democracy to Iraq or Afghanistan. It took a few decades for Taiwan, s Korea and Japan to open up their governments to free and fair elections.

This isn't a shorthand for only Trump either. The extremes of any party is more hungry and desperate for Power. Masking or hiding within the veneer of good and evil or Best Interests is usually a smell that the decisions being made stink.

You mean a "nationalist" such as Abraham Lincoln?

They are wise to put the interests of Slovakians first. We have seen the horrors that "diversity" has wrought on Germany, France, England, Sweden, etc.

Yes. Abraham Lincoln. Who famously assassinated the presumptive heir to the throne of Austrian-Hungarian Empire (which Slovakia used to be integrated into) Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914.

Is nationalism bad? Do the Olympics and World Cup trigger you? The nationalism at those events is off the charts.

I think the joke isn’t registering with you.

Nationalism isn’t bad. A world war resulting in tens of millions dying stemming from a complicated web of alliances because a nationalist assassinated a head of state is bad.

Nationalism is love of country and the desire for sovereignty. Mahatma Gandhi was a nationalist.

Nationalism wasn't the cause of either of the past two world wars.

Nationalism is for the ignorant masses. People are people.
