I post this while watching Mitchell go off again in the playoffs. Of all the teams that would pursue Mitchell while having a chance of re-signing him long term, the Rockets probably have the best potential package to send out. I think I would send Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and #9 for him right now and be fine with it, anything more and I’d have to think about it All in all though, I would be completely ok with the Rockets staying a patient and waiting to cash in their chips for someone next offseason
Conceptually, yes. But that would be conditioned on him agreeing to sign an extension with us. If not, I wouldn't trade much for him. Contingent on him signing on extension, I'd give up a lot for him.
Idk, I think people think highly of the Rockets trajectory and personnel (player and coach), don’t underestimate the city’s popularity with NBA players either
I don't know about the pricing, but if Donovan was on the market, Rockets would pursue. Question is the max price they think he's worth.
I think Rockets fans have an inflated view of our roster. I don’t mean that as criticism because I’m a fan too.
He’s made the playoffs every year, give him that, but that’s about where it ends. 17-18: 5th seed, lost in semifinals (4-1) to Rockets (Gobert, Ingles, Rubio, Favors, Crowder, O’Neale, Burks) 18-19: 5th seed, lost in first round (4-1) to Rockets (Gobert, Ingles, Rubio, Favors, Crowder, O’Neale) 19-20: 6th seed, lost in first round (4-3) to Nuggets (Gobert, Conley, Clarkson, Ingles, O’Neale, Niang) 20-21: 1st seed, lost in semifinals (4-2) to Clippers (Gobert, Conley, Clarkson, Bogdanovic, Ingles, O’Neale, Niang) 21-22: 5th seed, lost in first round (4-2) to Mavs (Gobert, Conley, Clarkson, Bogdanovic, O’Neale, House) 22-23: 4th seed, lost in first round (4-1) to Knicks (Garland, Allen, Mobley, Levert, Okoro, Osman) 23-24: 4th seed, lost in semifinals to Celtics (Garland, Allen, Mobley, Levert, Okoro, Strus) Where am I going with Donovan as my best player? The 6th seed, losing to the Thunder/Wolves/Nuggets in the first round? (Those teams aren’t going anywhere) 4th/5th seed, losing to Luka/Ja/Wemby? Now if you’re saying you got someone else lined up with him (preferably better), maybe?
Which would you rather do: Pay $46M/yr to a 27yo established top 20 player in Donovan Mitchell Or pay $50-55M/yr in combined salary to Jalen + Dillon?
Is the assumption that we will eventually land a top 5 player through trade or FA? Or that one of our young players/picks will become a top 5 player? Those outcomes seem highly unlikely. I don't see why adding a perennial all-star player under 30 hurts, if anything it could be the most realistic way to attract a bigger star.
