I’m not sure I understand your post. Are you saying they shouldn’t have attempted to take his firearms away?

No, they should have been. I was just cautioning that this event is probably not a rhetorical slam dunk for lamenting the lack of gun control because it demonstrates that we do have some gun control -- that Marshals will come after felons who illegally possess firearms. I don't disagree with RR that we should have more gun control, but if it's a black market gun then it is more about law enforcement than regulation. I guess we may well find out that this felon just bought his gun with a gun show loophole, but I have a gut feeling he just got it illegally on the street. The story strikes me more as a simple tragedy than it is a massive failure in our ability to regulate guns.

There is a lot of unquestioned propaganda when it comes to law enforcement officers "dying in the line of duty".

First, in a typical year over half of the total number of claimed officer deaths were the result of accidents, health related issues or friendly fire.

Second - the actual number of officers that die in shoot outs is quite small, especially when you consider how many local, state and federal peace officers there are - and that there are over 350,000,000 Americans.

Third - contrary to what the advocates for the fraternal order of police, officer deaths are not at an all time high. Far more officers died in the 60's-80's than die now.

As an example - in 2022 the press was told that 118 police officers were killed in the line of duty - and then the discussion immediately turned to police being shot and killed by suspects. This is deceptive..... first off, the 118 includes 58 deaths from accidents... this includes car accidents (which accounted for 40 deaths), Officers killing each other and officers shooting each other --- and health issues like heart attacks.

So, the actual number of police murders was 60.... across the entire USA over an entire year.

Being a police officer is not as dangerous a job as is depicted - especially if you are a police officer outside of the South.

Indeed, you are nearly 5X as likely to die at your job if you are a roofer - 4X as likely if you are a construction worked - 10X as likely if you are a professional hunter or fishermen ......... you also have day laborers, truck drivers, miners, bartenders, welders and other jobs that are far more dangerous.

The fatality rate for police officers are even below garbage men.

By comparison - police officers shoot and kill an average of 1,000 people a year in the USA.

My point isn't to say that the Police are all bad or not necessary - I believe that the police are needed. However - the narrative on the issue has been by the police departments around the country, and in reality they have systematically under-reported the number of police shootings of civilians resulting in death and have been purposely evasive when reporting officers shot and killed in the line of duty.

And... those that oppose gun control but think "something that should be done to protect our kids" think the solution is to arm school teachers with pistols.

‘Numerous’ officers down: How April 29 went from a normal day to tragedy in Charlotte

    CharlotteObserver.com
    BY MARY RAMSEY
    UPDATED MAY 03, 2024 4:56 PM

For almost four hours Monday, an east Charlotte neighborhood was locked down as a shootout between a suspect and law enforcement brought death and destruction.

The shooting killed four law enforcement officers — Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, Jr., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Joshua Eyer and Adult Correction Officers Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. Responding officers killed the suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, Jr. An additional five police officers were injured but are expected to recover.

Many questions remain unanswered about what happened over the course of the hours-long incident, but The Charlotte Observer has used livestreams, emergency scanner traffic, news releases, social media posts, other online records and interviews with neighbors to piece together a timeline of how things unfolded. Police are still reviewing body camera footage that hasn’t been released to the public and putting together their own precise timeline, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said this week.

The records shed light on the deadly shootout and ensuing standoff, as well as the ripple effects across Charlotte on one of the worst days in history for the city’s public safety forces.

    THE FIRST SHOTS

Jay Chhoeun, who lives next to the home on Galway Drive in the Shannon Park neighborhood where the shooting occurred, was among the first to know something was happening.

Chhoeun arrived home at about 1:30 p.m. Monday when he saw the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force pulling up to his neighbor’s house, he told the Observer the next day. Members of the task force told Chhoeun to go inside his home and take cover, he said. And he heard them announce they were there to serve a warrant as they approached 5525 Galway Drive.

By 1:33 p.m., his father, Saing Chhoeun, was live on Facebook showing two law enforcement officers shooting from behind a car in the family’s backyard. Sirens wail and gunshots pop in rapid succession in the background of the five-minute livestream as the two officers try to shield themselves behind the car and return fire.

CMPD later said the task force was there to arrest Hughes on a warrant for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony flee to elude out of Lincoln County. Investigators say Hughes began to fire on law enforcement from inside the house and the task force quickly radioed for back-up. Jennings said having a CMPD sergeant on the task force made that possible.

At 1:38 p.m., Charlotte Fire dispatch put out the first call for a “Medic routine medical” response at 5525 Galway Drive. Almost immediately, the dispatcher radios again to say the call has been “upgraded to a gunshot.”
