Do you remember back in the 80's when we (Reagan we) smuggled arms to Iran? And Central America? Were you here for this? Or were you just wacked out in a Berlin disco?

Here is Governor Newsom's response to the monolithic persecution of Jews occurring at his universities:
Been following the protest at my old school. Seems mostly peaceful and focused on following the rules. They have an orientation every 30 minutes to reinforce the ideas of being peaceful and civil. However, I have also seen some choices by individuals that honestly make me a bit uncomfortable. One is the choice to use the term Intifada, which is very loaded. Maybe that person is Palestinian and has a nuanced understanding of what they mean by it. But, most American students and American onlookers don't and will react negatively. I think the guy is probably not majoring in marketing, because this is not a good way to win friends and influence people. The other is scope creep. Some orgs are trying to hang their own goals on the stop-genocide tree. One group, for example, wants to stop what they see as the exploitation of the nearby low-income neighborhood by the university and likening their persecution to the persecution of the Palestinians (and recommending not-credible communist solutions). Whatever the merit of that accusation (which I think does have merit), that's not the message that got kids to go encamp the quad and risk arrest and expulsion. They came to protest a genocide in Gaza, but some onlookers will discount their voice, rationalizing that "they" also want to bankrupt the school paying reparations to their black neighbors, for example. But, one, they're young and don't have a whole lot of experience running a tight protest. Two, nobody is really in charge of a protest. There is some student group that got permission to start a protest, but then people just show up and are not accountable to the group. Three, opposition media will of course focus on the few who step out of line and ignore the mass that behave responsibly. And four, given all the other conditions, it's easy to sabotage a protest's messaging by writing an offensive sign and standing in front of a camera. This experience and the ones we had before with Occupy Wallstreet, George Floyd, etc, demonstrate the singular benefit a charismatic leader like MLK brings. A leader that grabs all the attention can shape a coherent message and the dissonant voices are minimized. In this new millennium, the only example I can think of a protest with a charismatic leader is Jan 6 with Trump. We know guys like Oathkeepers had an influence (and we're holding them to account), but the messaging from Jan 6 is mostly defined by what Trump said. It's probably just a Walmart tent. And yeah, people in 2 different places in the country thought that Walmart might be the best place to buy a lot of cheap tents.
There is no genocide in Gaza but there was on October 7th in Israel, perpetrated by the Palestinians.
