It is hard to say much about him as a baseball player. He may be a good person … but he has done a lot of damage. He and Tim Redding should talk.
Not exactly like this. Morgan Ensberg to a far lesser extent. Redding and Martes and Melusky all did it too - but they were jerks, not neurotic, with the exception of Ensberg. Whitley destruction is kind of unique. I would say Appel and Prior come to mind. Prior is the most on point but he had success - he just got lost in himself like Whitley.
I remember Redding blaming everyone but himself for his issues... the excessive hype around him got to his head it seems. Meluskey... didn't Bags and Biggio demand him off the team and for the return of Ausmus? I find that situation to possibly color how Bagwell and the old heads in the decision making room treated Maldy. But from all accounts, Yainer isn't hated. With Ensberg, the team still trusted him to coach and help with minor league development for a good number of years...
Melusky got hurt and didn’t work hard either - he was gone no matter what. Ensberg is considered a good teacher and coach. He just went too far taking pitches.
