Bastidas just hit a three-run homer (6) to give Sugar Land the lead in the 9th in Reno. I don't think he's really a guy, but he has slightly more upside than the Rylan Bannon/C.J. Hinojosa types that usually fill out the upper-minors rosters.
It's Grae Kessinger's turn to see if he can fit that role, but Dubon nailing down a place on this team kind of makes him redundant at this point. Also, sending Grae to Sugar Land would be pointless, so he's stuck. (Hope he gets a legit shot, though)
Zach Daniels, who has missed the first three weeks of the season, is on a rehab assignment with Fayetteville and he has homered.
Jake Bloss and Joey Mancini both turned in 4 solid innings for Asheville. Bloss: 2 H, 2 ER (1 on sac fly, 1 on RBI single), 3 BB, 7 K Mancini: 5 H, ER, BB, 7 K Jeremy Molero closed out a 4-3 Tourists win in Hickory. Jeron Williams went 2-4 with a two-run single.
Cesar Yankyel Hernandez went 3-5 and scored a run in his 2024 debut with Fayetteville. Oliver Carrillo drove in all four Woodpeckers runs with a three-run homer (2) and an RBI single, but Fayetteville lost 10-4 to Down East. Kenni Gomez went 2-4 from the leadoff spot. Alonzo Tredwell got roughed up in his third appearance; he was the first man out of the bullpen and allowed four runs on five hits, walked one, and struck out two in two innings.
Anyone have any news on why Brice Matthews has missed the last 10+ games? I tried looking for any injury news and couldn't find any. Also, anyone know about the kid in AAA from the Yankees that plays all over the infield. He's putting up some pretty decent numbers right now.
Yeriel Santos and Alain Pena were both solid on the hill tonight for Fayetteville. Santos: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; the two runs came on a homer. Pena: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K; 23 strikeouts this month (4 appearances, 15 IP)
I had no clue how much Cabbage was walking this season, currently at 23% (9% last season at AAA) Still striking out too much, but if you walk a ton it certainly helps offset it. Won't believe he can hit MLB pitching until he does, but still it's a pretty crazy number.
Cabbage hasn't done anything all that impressive. I think maintaining a 30% barrel rate over your first 100 PA, however, is quite impressive and the Astros, all things considered, should probably quit beating around the bush and cut bait with Abreu and promote Loperfido to give him a spin at 1B. What do they have to lose at this point?
Who wins the "Joey Gallo Impersonation Contest": Cabbage or Loperfido? The runner-up is "Low-rent Adam Dunn" Third place is a set of steak knives.
Cabbage hasn’t walked this much in years past, who knows if this is actual improvement or just early season flukes. Neither guy looks identical to Gallo; they strikeout a little less, walk a little less, but hit for less power. Both guys seem like “Gallo Lite”, which in today’s craft beer world probably will sit on the shelf awhile.
If they let Loperfido keep playing at high elevation, while playing CF, I believe he is the Second Coming of Joey Gallo
