H.R. 8081: the DISGRACED Former Protectees Act – or the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act A prominent House Democrat has introduced new legislation that would strip felons of Secret Service protection, specifically mentioning former President Donald Trump in case he's convicted in one or more of his criminal trials. Mississippi Representative Bennie Thompson, ranking member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, is bringing forth the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act—or the DISGRACED Act—which would terminate Secret Service protection for individuals convicted of either state https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-bennie-thompson-secret-services-rfk-1892371 Sounds good to me.
Democrats want to make laws to target a single person who also so happens to be a leading candidate. Sounds good to me. Republicans, its your turn to make an ultra authoritarian law that benefits nobody.
I have no problem whatsoever taking away Secret Service Protection from felons, regardless of their political party. Why should they be entitled to protection like that if they are convicted felons? That's like saying military vets with dishonorable discharges should receive the same benefits for life as those with honorable discharges. There's nothing authoritarian about it.
This. This kind of petty partisan bullshit needs to stop. It isn’t cute or in the best interest of the USA. All former Presidents need to be protected - it is very important for the purposes of stability and confidence in the USA. Trump was rightfully called out for his self serving antics - don’t care if it is a “R” or “D” - just stop it.
Why? Well it isn’t really about what the former President wants. It is about protecting all living people that have held the office from assassination - which would call into question the safety of the office. This isn’t a Banana Republic.
It seems like a Banana Republic in some ways. We would allow a convicted felon to be elected President. One who tried to overturn an election in fact. One who sat back and watched his supporters storm in the Capitol threatening to kill the Vice President. Then we give him all our nation's top secrets. The same man who would sell his soul to the devil himself for a buck. The same man who wants put to death anyone he deems his enemy, with full approval from his MAGA loyalists. Giving a sociopath/psychopath that authority, with lifetime protection is as crazy as it gets. The guy who wants total immunity. The guy who will promises to pardon all his loyalists, regardless of who they hurt or killed. It's mob mentality. Banana Republic here we come if Orange Man gets elected. He can hurt who he wants, yet get protected from harm his whole life, paid for by the government.
The proposed law to revoke Secret Service protection for anyone convicted and sentenced to more than a year in jail is not an authoritarian move, but it is an unwise idea. There are valid concerns about how to handle Secret Service protection for protected individuals who are incarcerated. Placing them in the general prison population would endanger not only their lives but also the Secret Service agents tasked with protecting them. However, removing the Secret Service detail is also inadvisable for the same safety reasons. Relying on the prison's security measures (as implied in the proposal) is not a viable solution, as prisons currently lack the capability to provide the level of protection required. The most practical approach would be to sentence such individuals to isolated confinement, which would inherently provide a secure environment with fewer personnel required for protection duties. Importantly, once released, these individuals must continue receiving Secret Service protection, not for their personal benefit but to uphold the integrity and security of the Office of the Presidency and the United States. Allowing a former President or their family members to fall into the hands of extremist groups like ISIS, potentially being executed for propaganda purposes, would gravely undermine the nation's standing, security, and credibility on the global stage. Congressman Bennie Thompson's proposal demonstrates a lack of foresight and consideration for the complex implications of such a policy change.
This proposal targets not a single person. Today, two individuals stand out as potentially impacted: former POTUS Trump and Hunter Biden.
This is a really dumb idea. We need to keep a security team on people that know a lot of our country's secrets. Talk about a ****ing shortsighted move. Let's not be petty now and use our brains to make good decisions.
If we used our brains to make good decisions then a lying con and felon should be disqualified from the office of President to begin with. Why hand over top secret info to a guy who can't be trusted to follow the rule of law? Maybe that's the biggest change that should be proposed of all.
We can't help who people vote for, but we should be having a security detail on someone that's not trustworthy.
Don't you think we should disqualify a felon as President though? It makes no sense to allow a convicted criminal to lead our country. Even our military and police can be disqualified for less than what Trump's done. His crimes involved fraud, rape, sedition, stealing top secret documents info and attempting to steal an election. If someone claiming innocence is proven to be a pathological liar when their claims of innocence are disputed with facts, evidence, and testimony, and they are convicted, then why wouldn't you want them disqualified from leading our country? I understand the justification comments about protecting former Presidents for life with Secret Service. But, what about protecting our country and citizens from being ruled by a convicted felon?
Just pretend that Trump was a Democrat and raped countless kids on Epstein Island and then you'll no longer give a f*ck. You're welcome.
