Now that I think about it, I haven't grown tired of Abreu at all. For I was tired of him from the very beginning.
Who are some rental first baseman that might be available at the deadline? Abreu will definitely get until the asb/deadline. Maybe we can trade some surplus pitching for a rental. Edit Here’s the list First base: Paul Goldschmidt, Pete Alonso, Rhys Hoskins (opt-out), Anthony Rizzo (club option), Josh Bell, Rowdy Tellez, Christian Walker, Ryan O'Hearn, Carlos Santana
If Houston is in a position to buy at the deadline I hope they go for a multi-year corner IF who can replace Abreu this year and offer an option as a stopgap replacement for Bregman next year. Luis Arraez, Jake Burger, Ryan McMahon, Isaac Paredes, Yoan Moncada, Yandy Diaz, Chris Morel, and Josh Rojas would be my starting point of players to check on.
Arraez/Burger would be great, but if Miami makes any big moves it will be to add hitting I like the position flexibility McMahon gives, but he is a sub 700 OPS guy outside of Coors, and is owed 56 million, hard pass for me Paredes and Morel are the two guys i'd have most interest in here, but isn't Morel a poor defender? I would think the cost for Paredes would be fairly high, but the organizations have made deals in the past and if Tampa can get guys they like with even more control they will always listen. He would be a great target in my opinion
Is the solution maybe bringing in another catcher and allowing Yanier to play 1B more? I don't think Belt is a viable option due to age and cost. Singleton isn't it. And the organization doesn't see Loperfido as it, at least not now. So why not Yanier? I don't know enough about Caratini to say whether he could or should handle a heavier load.
Yea. I thought about that. Salazar is actually hitting really well in AAA this season and he is already on the 40 man roster.
Seems like the easy in-house solution...at least short term. Put Abreu on the IL for a few weeks to reset. Go on a rehab assignment to see if he can get right. If not, it'll be time to make the bigger decision. But they could probably drag that out well into June and then know if we're back in this, if Diaz is a viable long term option at 1st, and if Abreu can be fixed.
They've put a ton of work into developing Diaz at catcher. I don't think they are going to temporarily move him to first to fill a hole (and i don't really want them to either). If someone else is playing first this year .. . it will be loperfido (i still don't see it), cabbage, rando AAAA, or a trade.
I'm not 100% sure the organization doesn't see Loper as the fix We are just now at the date where they gain an extra year of control over players. It's possible they have a higher evaluation of Loperfido than most others and think that extra year of control is worth keeping him down. Now, if this is the case, we will see him very soon
I think it’s actually possible he could put up a -5 war season if he gets 500 PA. He’s horrendous on defense and is a bad hitting pitcher basically
