Big earthquakes are big. This chart of energy released from all US earthquakes since 1965 compared to the Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964 is amazing. Incidentally, this week was the anniversary of the Great Alaska quake.
That's a fire whirl. Sort of the equivalent of a dust devil. Ones this size are fairly common. The differ from the extremely rare fire tornado in that they start from the ground and can break through the boundary layer of the air mass while a true fire tornado is spawned by a pyrocumulus.
