The Francis Scott Key bridge was struck by a ship this morning and collapsed. It's pretty fresh still so information is still coming in (about 3 hours ago). I heard that they have recovered 2 people so far.

For Houstonian reference, this is roughly equivalent to the 610 bridge collapsing. It's horrifying. Luckily they are only estimating about 20 people were on the bridge at the time, could have been much worse during rush hour or something.

This will shut down the Port of Baltimore for months, who knows what the traffic impact will be.

Prayers for the lives impacted. A tragic event.

Secondarily, the economic impact will be not small. This is a major industrial area for exports, and seaborne shipping will be shut down for a while - depending on what the plan is to rebuild. This is the type of target a military would go after to impact commerce and transportation... as well as create fear. I hope this is not the result of a coordinated attack on our country.

Why didn't the bridge have dolphins to protect the piers? I think I saw they had some to protect power lines running adjacent the bridge but not the piers themselves. Maybe it wouldn't have mattered though.

Thought I heard the news say the captain of the ship called in and had traffic halted on the bridge.

From the last video it doesn't look like there was traffic crossing near the point of impact, however, there are what appears to be some construction trucks on the right that fall into the water. I read somewhere that there was a crew on the bridge at the time of impact.

I'm surprised there isn't a Simpsons episode where Homer Pilots a Cargo Container.

The poor families of the people on the bridge during the collapse. I am already paranoided about failing roadway infrastructures when I drive over bridges. I hope the cause wasn't more sinister than an just accident.

The stuff of nightmares. I always think about this when crossing the Galveston bridge or the ship channel bridge on the east beltway.

What's the story with the captain of the container ship? Drunk?
