    Assume wind is not a factor and your team wins the coin toss. Do you elect to kickoff or receive under current playoff OT rules?

    In original instant sudden death OT rule, you obviously always receive. Unless wind was a factor, I am sure that under instant sudden death OT, no coach ever elected to kickoff. I mean winning by simply kicking a FG for the win is a no-brainer.

    So they modified it so that you could no longer win just on initial possession FG. But you could still win on opening possession TD. In that case, again, unless wind is a factor, why would you ever elect to kickoff? There is zero advantage.

    However in the current OT rules, that decision is no longer a no-brainer. They finally got it right and fair IMO.

    So what do people think? Kickoff or receive in OT?

    It has been pointed out that if the first team scores a TD then the 2nd team could go for 2 to avoid sudden death. But I think it's more likely that it gets to a 3rd possession due to the teams trading FG's, scoreless possessions, or matching TD + extra point, than both teams scoring a TD with a 2pt conversion factoring in to a loss for the receiving team. Always receive.

    I agree a 3rd possession would seem the most likely, but the advantage of knowing what to do on 4th down makes me lean toward kick, but I think you have to factor in what teams do well and how the game is going.
