Kind of always felt like something that was BS. There's just no incentive to leave a very good situation for a dumpster fire.
Why would Caserío go back to New England. They tried to sabotage his desire to initially join the Texans. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...st-texans-over-their-pursuit-of-nick-caserio/ The tampering allegations delayed the Caserío hiring by a year. So, why would he leave the Texans to go to a team that did him dirty? The Texans made him one of the top 3 highest paid GM’s. While the Patriots wanted him to take over eventually, but hindered his career through their selfish reasons. https://www.chron.com/sports/texans...general-manager-Nick-Caserio-bio-15853846.php
I would guess the answer is three-fold: 1) it's easier/more fun/challenging to build than it is maintain?; 2) assuming Belichick leaves, you'd be handed a blank slate to rebuild one of the NFL's marquee franchises; 3) whatever ties/connection you still have to the team/area. Also - and I'm not fanning any flames here; it sure doesn't seem like this is an issue at all - but Caserio and DeMeco are not from the same circles, so he may want that - to be able to hire his buddies, etc. You look at how often that Belichick tree recycles, and maybe that's a thing he wants to incorporate. Because - and, again, I have no idea if he cares - but he's not hiring any of his Patriot buddies here.
It will be interesting. I think there could be fire here. I do believe it's fairly common to hold over a GM for a year when a new HC comes on like the Texans did with Casserly when Kubiak came in (IIRC). Lots of variables at play. I remember Caserio saying at some point after the Lovie firing last year that 'whatever is best for the team' he would do, almost implying that he might be on the way out. There's also a money aspect - if Kraft pays the rest of his salary in a buyout AND give him a big annual raise, does he say no to that? It's a prime opportunity to cash in while his stock is high.
I'm not sure. I don't know who's on their staff outside of Adam Peters (Assistant GM) and Steve Wilks (DC). Steve Wilks may apply to this but I don't see him getting a HC position this time around.
