He was never terrible and whatever knowledge or statistic you thought you had to prove that, it was wrong. Just eat your crow and shut up now.
He wasn't a horrible player but he was a horrible shooter, and he was also a guy that took a lot of shots. Those types of guys hurt your offense really bad. He made up for it on the defensive end, but prior to this year his offense was really bad. Brooks randomly becoming Steph Curry from 3 has really changed the type of player he is. If he actually has become one of the best 3 point shooters in the league...I don't think anyone can say they expected that.
I think plenty of people can say they expected it, otherwise why would they have liked the signing. His offense in the past was a far bigger negative than his defense was positive.
He had some down years but I think he is closer to a league average 3 point shooter, similar to Ariza. He isn't a great offensive player but calling him horrible or terrible is wrong.
There's a big difference between "he can shoot better than he did in Memphis, maybe league average" and "better than Curry." I'm sure those who liked the signing thought he could shoot better than low 30s, but not this good.
This is one of those things that fans don't understand the difference between talent and decision-making. He has shot horribly because he takes a lot of bad shots, not because he lacks shooting skill. And while he's never been as a good a shooter as this year, if you just use his rookie shooting numbers adjusted to the shot distribution of this year (more 3s, more shots in the paint, fewer long 2s) he's still a league average shooter. And one more than worth his contract. His signing has always been more about whether Udoka can keep him playing in a certain way rather than his lack of innate offensive talent. Even as you say he's shooting like Steph from 3, he's still taking fewer shots than any year except his rookie season. He is shooting better to large extent because he's playing within himself.
