I would say he showed more consistency last year also. He's just a more polished player at this point and it shows in consistency. Green has very high peaks were you are like "ya he has that superstar ceiling" but it comes and goes still. What has changed this season is his baseline effort and competence on things like defense and taking care of the ball are at a level of a good NBA player this season. It's just his offense isn't consistent yet.
Right now, and I think under Ime it will largely stay that way, it's all about disciplined and tenacious team defense, and about a balanced offense. If the team wanted to feature one or the other, I think both Alpi and Jalen would have the potential to off for 40, 50 points in a given game. But that doesn't matter now. Let's keep winning!
Jalen has scored 10 or under and followed it with 3 successive 20+ point showings every time this year.
can't see a pathway for alp to drop 40-50. but he will be a triple double threat every night when shooters are knocking down shots. jalen can explode for 40 any night when his 3 ball is consistent. he gets 18 a night without it and that's a really promising baseline. Hopefully the coaches can work on his release because he still jumps 10ft in the air on every jumper.
Personally, I'm pleased with what Green is doing in his third year. He could easily have had a couple of 30ppg games *if not for the blowouts One more ppg and we would be talking about a guard who scores 5pts over FGAs attempted. That's no different than one of these top 3 shooting guards who average 26 points on TWENTY ONE attempts. Green already gets to the line more than all the top SGs in the league and that's with the Refs holding the whistle a bit. https://www.espn.com/nba/stats/play...ffensive/sort/avgFreeThrowsAttempted/dir/desc Jalen is doing more with less and really buying into the team defense this season. We really don't have any me-me players anymore. That 1 point might be miniscule but it changes the narrative on how some casuals and people who cover the sport view players for awards, rankings and 'roles'. 20ppg is sexier than 19ppg. It's like the 990 yard running back vs the 1,000 yard back. The 1,000 yard back will get more attention Everybody Eats! TLDR make your freebies, Alpi and Green!!!
Green has been pretty damn good outside if 1 or 2 games. To me, it looks like a virtual lock that the efficiency is going to be improved, and he is pretty much seemingly better at every aspect of the game. The starting lineup just works really well together. If you think about the fact that three out of the five guys should make massive progress over the next couple years, the ceiling is really exciting. Even Fred and Dillon are not necessarily on the downturn of their arc.
Anyone still think JG is the Rockets future "franchise player"? It's early in the season but I think his limitations are showing.
I think he can be an equal or better version of Jamal Murray to Alpi being our Jokic clone, eventually. That can still be a max player. But Alpi is the hub, and franchise player.
Jalen is currently the only player on the team averaging over 17 mpg with an EFG below 50% He's averaging 46.6%, an offensive specialist, a self-proclaimed "bucket" who continues to struggle at putting the ball in the actual bucket.
TS% Yr 1 - .547 Yr 2 - .538 Yr 3 - .540 (10 games) eFG% Yr 1 - .508 Yr 2 - .485 Yr 3 - .466 (10 games) Franchise player numbers and progression...
Jalen is shooting 42% from 2 point range…he shot 50% from there as a rookie and 47% last year if he gets back to just his career average from 2 point range, his overall FG% and efficiency probably jump to being pretty decent Idk why he seems to be regressing as a finisher…he makes some difficult layups in the halfcourt from time to time, but he’s consistently getting blocked or just smoking the layup if there’s any sort of contest…he also has like zero midrange game now he has major work to do on his drives
Yeah I mean it seems like the coaching is working, he's playing better on things that are coachable, shot selection, passing , defense, drawing fouls. The guy can't fking shoot or make layups, I honestly don't know what the answer is, can you even coach that? He's getting to his spots, he's getting wide open 3's just smokes all of them. Small hands maybe?
What disturbs me is JG should know what his limitations are by now, particularly finishing in traffic and dribbling. Whatever his finishing ability is, he should have adapted his decision-making to it accordingly. He also has to be tighter and stronger with the ball against teams that defend well. I trust Udoka. JG and Alpi were going to be either exposed or elevated this season. We still have a long way to go.
Im not seeing it with Jalen, but im going to give Ime more time to do his thing. Jalen hasnt had a real nba level head coach until this season so I think theres still a big jump possible. I dont think he'll be better than Sengun, but i think he can be a tier 2 type star if he get his **** together. I think Amen is going to be a better player than him as well.
His decision making needs to improve. His speed and hang time gives him the ability to beat 2 defenders at the rim or get fouled but it isn’t always the right play.
Green needs to learn when to attack the rim full bore and when to pull up and shoot that mid to short range J and add a AI/Parker float game, that's whose manual Silas should of been giving him instead of the said Curry playbook that he claimed to showcase to him rookie yr His defensive effort is a complete 180 and damn good sign compared to first couple seasons which could be affecting his current O game, but he still needs to hit his wide open shots, and needs to shoot with his body squared up and not fadeaway as much as he does on those open mid range shots Good thing he seems to be coachable and takes his shots within the offense and only ramps it up with the second unit (as needed) I always said you have to wait until year 4, especially for most players who came straight out of HS, and had horrible coaching staff for development, something Kobe/KG/Amare avoided and came along in way better environment Good thing they have Udoka and his staff who is teaching and pushing him to be a more complete player and that should help him in the near future The team already exceeded my 4-5 win prediction for this first 10 game stretch, hopefully they can keep it up and Green gets his O efficiency (and late game decision making) up as well, which will make winning even easier for the Rockets....TBD
The thing that frustrates me most with Jalen, is that there is no logical reason why he isn't doing better. He has immense physical talent, according to everyone he's a hard worker and the fact that he's "weak" is no explanation as to why he can't ever finish in traffic when players like Ja Morrant exist. So what is it with him? His shot is incosistent, i get that. But why is he so bad at finishing at the rim? I can't figure it out why he looks great every now and then just to look so terrible the very next game.
The reality is Jalen just isn’t skilled enough. There is no skill of his that is truly high-level in comparison to the rest of the NBA. Can’t get by just on athleticism anymore like he has been able to in previous levels of competition.
