It was on in Austin this morning. It is an old story, but I didn't hear it the first time, and I don't remember it being posted on the BBS. Anyway, the story was on the NPR show "This American Life", and was very good. Unfortunately you have to buy the story for $3.95 if you are interested in listening to it.

This American Life: Lost in Translation

Some of the things covered in the story include:

-Colin's relationship with Yao, his parents, players, media, fans
-Women passing notes to Colin during games... Colin not taking advantage of it.
-Going out with Yao to a Karaoke bar. You can hear Colin singing a Chinese love song and Yao singing Backstreet Boys (ouch).
-They also have an exerpt of Yao speaking English which I have never heard.

Unbelievable. Even Colin could score groupies if he wanted to. This reminds me of a story about Danny Bonaduce, and how he lost his virginity to a girl that wasn't able to get into David Cassidy's dressing room.

Colin Pine picks his nose and eats the buggers. Nasty, but true. On a regular basis at that.

You don't have to buy stories on This American Life, you can listen to them for free. Look to the left where stories are broken down by the year they were originally broadcast. It's a great show. Probably the best show in radio.

Actually the free Real Player link is on their front page. .... Try listening to some other shows. It's great. I recommend the show about the prisoners performing Hamlet. It's in the 2003 or 2004 set. Their is also an hour long basketball themed show from back in the 90's focusing mostly on the Bulls seeing as the show is done in Chicago.

just listened to this for the first time..

credit should go to the even older thread..

Regardless, it was interesting to listen to, even if it's ridiculously old and Colin Pine is no longer part of the team.

Here's the site to listen to it..

    http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1041

Click on the orange "Full episode" button on the left. Let it load for a bit. Then slide the bar over to the 40:00 mark, cause that's about where the Colin Pine / Yao thing starts.

It runs for about 20 mins

This show aired a couple of years ago I think. TAL is definitely the best thing on radio at the moment. I love the show.

Amazing how involved Colin was when Yao first arrived. They basically were attached at the hip for the first couple of years.

What's he doing now? Anyone know?

I think he got a very good position in NBA, and now he works in NBA China.

i blame him for yao's mistakes during his first 3 years.

Thanks for posting this, good listen.

Colin's Chinese and translating isn't really that good. KG's strong arms and legs? 'Long limbs' was what Yao was getting at.

Yep it was Colin's fault that Yao got blocked out by smaller guys, got rebounds stolen from him and didn't dunk very much. ;)

I just listened to the story and it was pretty good. I wonder if Yao still keeps in touch with Colin Pine?

Dumb Carroll Dawson hired Yao a soft interpreter. Yao would have become a harder man if CD hired a harder interpreter.
